I’m getting my Subaru donor vehicle today, is there a detailed description of how to remove the engine and wiring harness? The donor car is a 2001 Subaru Legacy Outback. What other parts should I remove as well?

Seems like an excellent question to ask on a site devoted to that particular marque.

Rocky Mountain Westy has a good step by step on their website.

Because this isn't Vanagon or Eurovan discussion...... Though admittedly loosely Vanagon but not really........

I'm moving this to off topic, leaving a post shadow here so others can see it until it vanishes onto page 2&3&4&5...... Out of sight.

Rules are rules...........

There is a good tutorial at www.boxerswaps.com and I think a video on his YouTube channel, "Busaru".

Did this to a 2001 Forester last weekend. The Boxerswaps.com instructions were super helpful even though I think they use a Legacy, it was all pretty similar.

Unplug everything, pull the whole dash, drop the steering wheel, remove the support bar, remove the AC channels.

The most important tool is cold beer. Have fun! Very Happy

short sequence

remove dash/hvac unit. you will need to (ahem) LEGALLY evacuate the a/c system

remove l/f fender

as stated, have beer on hand, and 1/4 metric swivel sockets.

It took me about 2 hours to pull the motor and 2.5 hours to pull the harness, what a PITA!

Took me a bit longer with marking all the connections with masking tape. Even the ones you don't want, you probably want to mark, so later you don't go, "What is this? Do I need it?"

Some wires and connectors came in handy later for use elsewhere, or lengthening sections with same color wires. Keep your pile until you don't need it anymore, and then a bit longer.

Lesson learned for me: If the donor has electric windows and you want to preserve the interior for parting out, make sure they are closed before you completely scotch the electrical system.

Excellent resources! You guys rock! Thank you!

I'm going to send the harness to RMW as I'm getting their fantastic kit anyway.

well, I do this crap for a living....

while the a/c machine was sucking out the 134, I was in the car pulling the dash. it comes out as an assembly, in about 20 minutes I had the dash out, another 15-20 the hvac unit was loose.

by then the a/c machine sucked it down, so I split the box, cut the harness back to the door jamb and rolled it in a box to ship off.

left engine in the car till I got the harness back.

got harness back, hooked the 3 wires together jumped the starter and made sure everything worked.

unzip intake, (while the coolant was draining) did all my top side stuff first. coolant done, pull radiator/condenser

up in the air, drop exhaust, do all my bottom stuff

back down

pull engine

the biggest bitch was the bell housing welded itself to the block. I good sharp air chisel took care of that.

all told, it was out of the car in 1:15

multitask!

I watch guys that have let's say a brake job to do and a oil change, balance and rotate.

they will change the oil. then do the brakes. then b&r.

I blow it in the air, pull the drain plug, blow the wheels off, do brakes, b&r install drain plug etc etc....got to make every motion count in my line of work

Awesome reply, thanks!

Got any hints as to where the fasteners are to remove the dash? Or are they obvious?
