Hello type 3 folks! I need some help. These type 3 heads came off my '63 Bug's (original 40 horse block) engine. It ran stock 77mm pistons and not sure about the crank (64 or 69). I've been told that they might be a rarity but idk. Might rebuild them for a build I am in the process of right now (40 horse with 83mm big bore). Any thoughts or recommendations on this? Just how rare are these heads? (The clean head is a type 1 40 horse shown for comparison...identical except for valve size and depth of cut for cylinders)
See my other post in the bug forum http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=622653

IIRC, the intake valves are larger in diameter but both heads share the 'flat' manifold surface. Several owners of super early (>62) Type 3s are known to use the Type 1 40 HP heads since they're easier to find.
That being said, the Type 3 heads in NOS condition are not hard to find, IMO.
The audience/market for them is very small, however, due to the fact that they're usually more expensive and not in high demand.
It doesn't matter how rare something is if there is no demand/interest. |

Are these heads a good choice for my bb 40 horse build? I figure the bigger valves wouldn't hurt. Are the intake valves the same size as square boss 40hp heads? |

I don't have enough knowledge about the 40hp heads to answer your questions. |
