I saw this ad in the classifieds from member consvws.
Why did someone cut out the spot where the speaker was located?
Mine is the same way and I'm wondering why?

I understand the speaker went there originally behind a perfectly good dash, but why cut up the dash? _________________ Tad Bailey

the million $ question, why did the PO do( --------------------- )because it was just a clapped $50 POS
IIRC it was perforated originally so maybe it disintegrated. _________________ Rick

I know way to much about the dreaded PO. Should have really taken that into consideration when posing my question.
But then I get thrown a curve and suggestions with viable reasons, disintegration or dash board maggots, understood. Oh well....
I'll figure out someway to hide it from my wife. _________________ Tad Bailey

Well, my guesses would be....
1.) Too low for a gage of some kind. Couldn't see it.
2.) Blew out the old speaker listening to Deep Purple "Burn" on the radio, too loud, (REAL easy to do) and couldn't figure out how to remove it.
3.) Hacked in a spot for the Pioneer Super tuner cassette player and FM converter. (So he could play Deep Purple "Burn" loud enough to blow out the Jensen Co-Ax's he stuffed behind the back seat)
Probably #3

Well then, who's floor is it? Please tell me you're not parting out your SB at Gramma's house!
I'll have to see if your defense of using the set of "Good Times" as a photo backdrop constitutes a threadjack...
In related news though, visit your local car stereo joint. They all have a box in the install bay full of odd shaped pockets they pull from cars. That's how I filled a similar chopsake on my '77 FJ-40. _________________

Now I'm having to defend someone else s floor?
If you re-read my original post I mentioned I hijacked the picture from a fellow Samba member, consvws. Found it in the classifieds
Does remind me of my grandmothers kitchen floor though, you're right about that.
But in their defense, it looks well taken care of!
And SBD, we're on the same page. I need something to fill that hole! _________________ Tad Bailey

Buy a cheap trash can like this one:
Cut a square out of it, and bend it to fit the hole. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Seriously, I think I would try to fab up a cup holder setup there. Maybe you could use some of the screen that 'switcomb" suggested, have it attached to the outside of a holder that would swing out like a door. Have a small magnet attached to the inside of the dash pad that would hold it closed when not in use and also hold it open when you're using it.
Kind of make it like a small box with a hole in the middle for the cup.
Just a thought....

Take measurements, fab up a little cardboard template and visit the local junkyard. I bet you could find some kind of ashtray, cupholder, tissue box....SOMETHING to go there. Or make your own little fill plate and mount some gauges, a clock, some knobs, cig lighter, switches, levers...pretend you're James Bond! _________________ 1971 STD BEETLE- DD-1st car, 1st love. keepin' it stock! 1600DP, Solex 34-3 Mexi Bosch SVDA Dist NOW w/POINTS
