Hello everyone. I have a 1973 bus with the original type 2 engine in it. My engine is bad and locked up. Someone here locally has a good running type 4 Porsche 914 engine. Will this engine work in my bus? I have the complete exhaust, engine bar, sheet metal, fan housing and other parts from the old engine. will these parts transfer over to the 914 engine? the guy with a 914 engine is including all sheet metal fan housing carburetor and other parts as well with his engine. Thanx

Is his a running engine that you could listen to? If not, think about the warranty he is offering, and his reputation when you decide what it is worth.

Will it work? Yes. However; the 914 motor has a different (higher) compression due to the flat top pistons. Bus pistons are dished. If you intend on running a stock heater, the exhaust and heads are different. The different location for the dip stick and oil filler won't matter; because you have the engine hatch. Think twice about running it for a long period of time. That motor was perfect for the little 914, your big bus...not so great. If your intention is to use it as a temporary fix while your bus motor is rebuilt, then I say go for it. Very Happy

It depends exactly what model engine and if it's still stock. 1.7, 1.8 or 2.0L?
It will transfer over fine if you switch the top tin, flywheel, clutch,PP and exhaust from your bus engine over. It has a single or dual carbs? Those weren't stock on a 914....all USA versions were FI.

Ok. then what do I do about the exhaust and heater boxes. Do I use the 914 heat exchangers / heater boxes and modify them to try to fit or if the original type 2 heater boxes and muffler won't cross over to the 914 engine what do I do?

You can't use the 914 heat boxes as they point the wrong way and are too long.
Use the bus ones as they fit fine.
