If they're installing the new LED bulbs, you're probably not gonna like 'em. They put them in around our little town, and now things are so bright you cannot see the sky. My daughter's room is lit up like daylight, and the streetlight is over 200 feet away.
But they're saving the planet I guess. _________________ nothing |

the difference between thet two picture seems to be more about the 1st being blurry, and the second not blurry at all... _________________ 1964 Turkis Flipseat |

oh there's no doubt about light pollution.
the two picture used to show the difference with LEDs are just misleading a bit. _________________ 1964 Turkis Flipseat |

This has been going on for years. First with the mercury vapor (bluer, like HID headlights), then high pressure sodium (yellow color like in the "before" photo), and now with LEDs.
Each was brighter and more energy efficient than the prior technology, and each has a new set of problems relating to the spectrum output, relating to the spike in certain frequencies of interest to scientists when looking into deep space.
Additionally, traditional "uplights" that wash the sides of buildings throw much of their light up into space and into the atmosphere where it scatters and spoils night sky viewing for people. This is not an "LED problem" but a "fixture design" problem, increasingly dealt with through lighting standards in building codes.
The photos in the article do not address these real problems, and instead are sensationalizing the issue implying brightness is the problem. Shoddy reporting.
Google "dark sky" for a better discussion:

I don't proclaim to know anything about this in detail but I live in a town with some dark sky rules. We don't have any street lights so it is really dark at night unless the moon is out. The sky here is pretty nice.
I recently saw some people saying they needed to update the rules to account for new LED lighting but LEDs were not the issue, it was what kind of LEDs are used. You can use ones that do not affect the view of the sky.
KTPhil is correct too - I have seen this discussion in the past having nothing to do with LEDs but with other types of new lighting. _________________ How to Post Photos

I didn't mean to infer it is a new problem just ongoing.
I had the privilege of living off the grid on the CO/WY border for over 12 years with no city lights so I am just used to nothing but the milky way and stars at night _________________ Rick
