|
|
Hi, can anyone help me identify what this outlet is for. I recently purchased a 1960 356b with a 1963 engine. Trying to get the engine started and noticed oil coming from this open threaded outlet when cranking engine. It was non operable when purchased. There is nothing in the engine compartment that could possibly hook up to it. I checked the web and can't find an engine with similar plumbing. Maybe an outlet for a gauge? Wondering if it could if I could just cap it off. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That would get my vote. Neither of my engines has that fitting. Looks like a P.O. disconnected the oil pressure warning light sender and like had a pressure gauge installed. Is there a separate oil pressure gauge somewhere on the dash? No idea why it is now disconnected. I don't know if it would be better to cap it off or remove it entirely but as you found out, you can't leave it as is. maybe Jack Staggs will see your post and comment. Good luck with your car. |

Thanks Jon
It doesn't have an oil pressure gauge on dash. Only temp and Oil Pressure light which is inoperable.
Thanks for input |

That little barb looks to be threaded. All I can think of is a mechanical oil pressure gauge. It is not stock... |

If you know a knowledgeable 356 mechanic in your area, explain the situation to him (or her, no bias here) and get a recommendation. Personally, I'd ditch it and take it back to stock--hook up the original pressure sensor and all, but it's your engine. I would hate to hear that you capped the fitting and the cap failed. Not good at all. Again, best of luck and let us know what you decide to do. |

It looks like an additional fitting was added between the oil pressure idiot light switch and the tall hex nut. Remove the fitting and screw the ops directly to the nut. The ops has tapered threads, so don't get greedy. _________________ Jack Staggs

Thank You Guys
I took Jack's advice and just removed the fitting. Still working on trying to get it to run but at least I can crank it now with less worries.

Of course, Mr.Staggs is correct about the custom fitting.
You might want to hold on to it, but understand it is probably missing a connecting nut for what was probably a pressure sender. The better solution is a combo sender with two poles, one for the gauge and one for the lite.
By the by, if you haven't already, look around for the wire that is supposed to be connected to the pressure lite switch; that should solve one of your minor issues.
Good luck. _________________ Keep 'em flying...

If you go with the VDO combo sender, be aware that this unit will typically turn the idiot light on when pressure drops below 8-10 lbs., where the stock unit doesn't activate the light until pressure drops below 2-3 lbs. _________________ On a lifelong mission to prove (much to my wife's dismay) that Immaturity is Forever!! |
