Hi all, I'm working on a daily driver 68 ghia. It's time for me to paint it base coat/clear and I'm getting metallic cold feet! I want the ghia trout blue, but I'm worried my amateur body work is going to look terrible with a metallic vs a solid color. I've painted a ghia before, and some motorcycles, but never a metallic. I've done all I know to get it straight, like use guide coats, long block sand in criss cross up to 600 grit, etc. So how much more difficult are metallics really? Ive read it all about laying metal flake uniformly and to have body panels in correct orientation and all. Everyone says metallics show every little flaw, such as what? My backup paint would be a solid sea blue color.
Thanks! |

I have never personally had any issues with metallics (and I am a amateur for sure!).
They will settle in large sanding scratches but if you have done 600 grit you should be fine.
The panels should not be off the car (hood fenders, doors, etc).
If you can change the direction between coats it helps. IE: north to south one pass then east to west the next.
I also "fog" a coat on for the last coat (before clear) where I am trying to get a nice even distribution of the metallic particles and not working about color coverage. |

Well I can do that! That gives me confidence for the metallic. I don't have sanding scratches, I'm still nervous about how straight it is though. Anyway, im going to shoot the metallic as best I know how. |

You can put any colour you want on it and scratches will show if it has a shine.
When you think it is smooth enough, sand some more. Preparation is what you see in the final coat.
Its not that hard to get a nice even colour with metallic, your going to find putting the clear on a bit harder.
Grapes and drapes, but don't worry they will sand out.
Make sure you have good lighting |

When you say you fog on a coat at the end, do you just hold the gun further away or adjust the gun for less fluid flow (or does it matter)? |

A lot of times if you have to fog, you pull back on the gun a few extra inches and rapid crisscross pattern and try preventing wet lines in the base.
The clear gives you the shine |

Exactly...just pull the gun back some.
Normally you are going in lines from east to west with over lap. When I fog I just bring the gun back and "mist" the paint on. Your looking at a large section of panel for even distribution of flake versus watching your overlap lines and how wet your laying the paint down.
It will seem natural when you do it. You will be able to look and say "that looks good". When you do you are done. |

That's the key right there. Paint manufacturers (PPG and Dupont) recommend the color coat (BC/CC system) be flat or no shine. This is especially true of metallics. You don't want the paint to shine, you want the clear to shine. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Took all your help and put it to good use! I learned the metallic doesn't lay well and makes stripes when it's applied too wet. So I applied the base a little more dry and crisscrossed a mist coat on afterword and it turned out great.

Now that is the way its done.
Nice looking job right there.
Well done!
Surprising how the colour just jumps out with the first wet coat of clear |
