|
|
Hey all, I'm thinking about buying a 1967 vw bug "VIN117295517. Dont have any pictures now but I'm hoping to go out this week. The lady bought it for $1000, guess the person she bought it from was in desperate need of some cash. She wants $1200. I've seen a couple pics, someone lowered it, body looks straight, front half of headliner is gone so is the liner under the rear window. I know the usual spots for rust, under doors, battery, etc.... Are there any specifics I should look for on the 1967 model? anything that will make me say I need that car? |

Piles of cash stuffed away under the seat cushioning the worn out springs
It's an early 67 ..Like a late October 66 model. It wont ...or shouldnt have the slanted rear over riders and it will have the black seat pulls that arent located in the upholstery side of the seat, but lower down by the heater channel. H code engine, year only air cleaner....check out the videos that [email protected] has on the year only stuff. There's a thread here on it as well. Those seat recliner's most of the time break off, so if you have one on each side, that's a plus. Factory seatbelts and popouts are also cool. If the rust isn't bad and it runs, 1200 isnt too bad

I grew up in Portland! I live in Tacoma now, but I visit the area frequently, in fact I'm in Gresham now, which is just down the road from Sandy. Where is this car? Maybe I can go look at it for you before I head back north?
As you know, the PNW is wet, however we don't salt the roads in the winter. Getting a car of this vintage that doesn't have cancerous rust is hit and miss. I recently restored a late '67 (see the link in my sig) and when I bought it it was vastly original, ran, drove, stopped, it did have rust but very treatable, and I paid $2000 for the car, bought it from someone in Battleground, WA. If the car you are looking at is solid $1200 is a steal. _________________ Please check my '67 sedan project progress!

that's what I'm kinda thinking on the price. I got a little more back story today. The car was seized by police to look for drugs. Not sure if it went to a police auction or was just released when nothing was found but the guy she bought the bug from needed money for rent and didnt want to part with it..... Would the title be flagged if the police seized the car for search? or is that only when you get a salvage, rebuilt, etc...... |

I bet you could use some graffitti remover and get rid of that red paint if you so wish. Pretty decent starting point. I'd start collevting pieces to put it back 67 correct, like steering wheel, oil bath air filter, and painting those tins for start. There's a gem under all of that for sure

Definetly want the red off, you think graffiti remover would work?. Also I've been already looking around for some 67 parts that are missing. First thing I'm gonna do is remove the engine and overhaul it, and god yes paint them! why blue..... why |

Here's a trick an old sign painter gave me to remove hand painted letters on a used commercial van I bought. Use oven cleaner. I think I used Easy Off, and it removed all the black painted letters without harming the factory paint. A word of caution here- I don't know what type of paint the red is and likewise for the white. To be on the safe side I would test a small area first to make sure it works!

Congrats! Is it solid with no rustouts?
Yes, original, as in factory, is the way to go if you want to keep it's value. |

Looks like a good deal. Are you located in the PDX area? The bug run is coming up in late May, are you heading down to Woodburn for that? If so, maybe I'll see you there. I'm trying to get my '67 on the road in time for the bug run. _________________ 1967 Bug, 1985 BMW 635csi euro, 1998 BMW 528i, 2003 BMW 325xi wagon, 2000 Tahoe LT |
