OK, I've used the search here and elsewhere and still have some questions.

My trikes shifter is sloppy as all heck and will go into reverse if you look at it hard. I understand this is all curable by replacing the bushings and such, no problems there.

The problem is where the shifter is located, basically. In the center between my legs. Convenient, yes. Also occasionally painful! I'm 5' 10" but have short legs so my seat is pretty forward. Every so often a shift will smack me right in the crotch. Shocked

Looking for a short throw shifter with a short handle. I do mean short, less than the 10" ones I see listed as "short". I also like the trigger style of reverse lock out. As the shifter is centered a T-handle doesn't work very good either.

So am I just searching wrong or does a shifter like this not exist?

I've not seen a short trigger lock. If you can find a used one in the classifieds, it wouldn't be difficult to cut it to length that you want and weld it back together. The trigger locks are usually just a cable anyway, so that can be shortened as well. If you can live without a trigger, cutting a stock shifter down and rethreading the top for the ball is very easy.

Not sure it would be practical in your application but there are linkage systems which offset the shifter to the side in a single seat vehicle.

The buggy super shifter in that pic or even the copy is a lot better than a stock one. If I had a place to put it I would run one on my trike.
I also prefer mine shifter out the lh side.

I have been considering the Jamar side shift unit but then I also need to get a shift box and shifter. But a left shifter is something I am used to; like a suicide setup on a bike.

You should try to ask JAMAR but I think the input and output levers on the side shift linkage mechanism could probably swapped so it could be used on the left.

The knob is the reverse lock out, correct? Does it have to be held in to get in reverse? How would single hand use work with it?

So far, I will most likely just cut the stock shifter down some. Cash flow problems.

Gotcha... I am thinking I am going to change mine to the side shift setup... very new at this vw game, but learning quickly. Infact in negotiations for another trike now

If anything I'm getting more and more disappointed with mine.

Finally got the brakes all sorted out and working awesome but now it won't run for more than 1/4 mile or so. It will sit and idle but get moving and within a short time, it spits, sputters and shuts down.

Most likely just a fuel filter going bad but since I've had it (about three months) I've gotten one decent ride on it. Mad

I used a side sifter and it works great as long as you keep it bolted down tight and adjusted correctly

I picked my scoot up last friday... rode it around a lil sat and sunday to get used to it.. then after work friday put 40 or so miles on it.... then tuesday took it to work and the shifter is stupid sloppy.. causing me to miss shifts and stall.

Sadly my front forks developed a leak.. and the engine has a bad leak.. I am hoping it is only blow by on the engine and the forks leaking is more I beleieve is due to them being from a 74 CB 550.

My scoot is more a traditional bodied trike. I am going to have to move my shifter from the right side over to the left side... Plan is to try one of the Jamar shifters.. then if needed do the side shift on it.

Crazy as it sounds I am negotiating a deal on a 76 one with a girder front end too. we shall see what happens

I use the super shifter mounted on its side, handle out to the left. It puts the reverse lockout button under the end of my thumb if I grab the shifter shaft - wrap my fingers around the shaft (that sounds lewd). Press the button with my thumb and move the shaft down and back to hit reverse. It works great in that arrangement. No need for the side offset mechanism with a small u-joint at the transaxle end of the control shaft. Shifter is some 40" in front of the trans.

Well I just pulled the trigger on the super shifter... went for a ride on my scoot, and could only get 2 and 3rd gear.. no first or 4th.. well got back home and looked at the Ghetto fab the PO did. Apprently he used what appeared to be 1/8 or thinner tube that he heated and bent to make the shifter.. to solve the length problem he slid it inside the other tube.. then driled a hole that was too bif for the 5/16 bolt.. so needless to say the more you used it.. the looser it got cause the tube was deforming... WTF

SO I ordered the shifter shifter kit, and a few other misc things to get scoot back like it should.

Mine uses the stock VW Shifter bracket mounted on the tube frame and sticks out the side of the fiberglas body, We made an adapter that connects a shorter shaft to the hockey stick.. Should be in this video..

The machine work and fabrication are impressive. What problem with a stock coupling were you overcoming? Does your design have the same length and lateral fine tuning an adjustable shift rod end has?
