Awesome indeed! Should flow quite nicely.
How are you going to do the rims - Gobi, or white? _________________ 1973 karmann ghia - current, not the last VW.

When you say that the vinyl is used on the dash, do you mean the dash face or the dash top?
I seem to recall some discussion about there not being any faux woodgrain dash faces available for the RHD Karmann Ghias - is that correct?
Besides, someone has to plant some seeds of doubt that can grow and slow your progress down a bit, so it may as well be me. |
I'm going for the painted dash face - filled in some holes to be able to do that. As you say, no woodgrain dash for RHD, and I like the look of the painted dash anyway. As for slowing me down - ain't gonna happen. I'm on the last lap.
I hope.
This project has been like having a child. It starts with love, then some bewilderment as you have no clue what to do with the baby. Then comes fascination as the child starts walking and talking, followed by some work showing real progress, until the teenage years when you start wondering why you ever embarked on this journey. But you soldier on, having no other choice. And then you just want them out of your house. Unfinished. Let some college take over.
So mine is at "college" right now - for paint and work on the engine. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Your Ghia is looking really nice. Keep up the great work!
You probably already know this, but I would recommend using a rat tail file and cleaning out all of the trim and emblem holes before paint...and make sure that the side trim holes aren't too thick with filler or the trim clips won't fit.
I couldn't tell from the pictures, but it looked like maybe the holes for the rear bumper supports got filled in. These are a threaded hole, so make sure these are cleaned out too...unless you plan to not use these support bars. |
You saved me from making a fool of myself, yet again. Yes, the threaded hole for the left side rear bumper support is not there. The repair panel needs, you guessed it, a further repair. We'll take care of it later in the week, or maybe next week. The pictures prove your point:
Right side first, as it should be, then left:
I also followed up on your advice and used a small rounded file to clean out the holes where the trim fixings have to go. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

I'm going to paint the rims in body colour, that is to say, Lotus White - with plain black tyres - no whitewalls. There'd be too much white then. I prefer understatement to flash, if you know what I mean. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

We've got to the next stage, which is seam-sealing. I spent the whole day under the body sanding and scrubbing to roughen the insides of the wheel arches and everything else under the body to prepare them for paint.
There are so many places where different metal panels or parts meet that the sealing process is likely to take all of tomorrow as well.
This was just the beginning:

Thanks for that, Darrel. I'll look inot that this morning. I know I have a long section of that rubber for the splash (mud) guards. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

I did a lot of sanding and sealing the last 3 days. So much so that the ridges that should be my fingerprints have worn off. No fingerprint ID for me for a while.
We tried a product for seam-sealing and it works well. It's on the left. We also tried another product for textured paint, but it didn't work so well. It's on the right.
The interior gaps have been seam-sealed with the Uniflex PU. It works easily and settles nicely.
We drilled the holes where Ghiagirl warned me that I had overlooked something when welding in a repair panel. Now my new bumpers will be able to be fitted securely.
We moved the car back to the paint shed - right outside the booth - and tried the stone chip product - Siltex 800 - that didn't work for us. It doesn't have enough "build) to provide the texture we're looking for. It's not "thick" enough to cover blemishes in the metal underneath and to my eye looks stippled (like sand) rather than textured.
So it's back to the drawing board for that. (But it gives me a 4 day break to work on the chassis and engine while we wait for the product the painter guy wants to arrive.) _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

When you do the texture don't forget to get a few good sags here n there. I noticed quite a few inside the doors and rear quarters.
I am looking into truck bed liners that are paintable.
Rhino
Hippo
and others
Darrell is correct on the nose seal. It is the same seal as the mud guards. There are about 10 spots on mine that use it.
Does anyone know if they were in before or after paint?????? |

I would guess after paint, my experience was they are a bit of a pig to get in and out.
What was the sealant you used John? I have a guy coming to check my beetle for painting on Sunday so want to get the seam sealer done before it goes in.
I'm also toying with the idea of just having paint under the guards and not stone chip so it likes smooth and shiny, its not going to be a daily driver so shouldn't get too battered....i may however quickly come to regret that decision of course. _________________ Rusty 61 RHD Karmann Ghia Coupe - Resto in progress....slowly

Wurth adhesive seam sealer with the Car system sprayable sealer sprayed over top once the Wurth was dry. To spray the sealer like I have you need a special gun and some luck. |

Spray at around 80psi, less pressure = more texture, rougher finish. |

My number one helper stripped the paint off the front and rear deck-lid's hinge springs and one other spring. It's dirty work, but someone has to do it.
After pic: Note the tools, including my all-time favourite, a mid-fifties Joseph Rodgers pocket knife (rescued from a distant relative's toolbox). That knife has been used to scrape the muck off more of Emiko's parts than I care to remember. The Rodgers used to sell for a dollar when I was a boy, when you could buy a good knife for about 20 cents.
I'm thinking of electroplating the springs. My painter guy says it's almost impossible to get the paint right on springs. Your opinion on this, gentlemen (and Ghiagirl)? _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly
