On Deluxe splits where the horn is behind the fender, was a block out plate used between the decorative, round grill and the fender to hide the direct view of the horn, or was the horn visible through the grill?
I've seen it used on the early 60's cars but I'm not sure if it was used on my 49 deluxe? |

The block out plate behind the latter style oval shaped horn grills didn't block the sight of the horn. It was used on the fender that didn't have the horn. The side with the horn had an open hole with the grill. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

Duh, of course you are correct on the location.
My question stands. Was one used on a split? |

I think no.
Just bare paint behind the grill.

He is right, the right fender never received the hole, just the grill to even out the look. _________________ Currenlty Corralled:

On splits the horn was visible through the grill, but the other fender only had the tab slots to hold the grill on, no hole for the horn sound to get out.
Latter when they went to the oval shaped grills, they had a separate block off plate that went behind the horn grill on the non-horn side. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

Glenn is correct. No plate on driver's side. You can see the horn. _________________ It all works on paper.

Here´s the 1953 parts catalog.
Lists round and oval grills but just an oval backing plate for the right side.
So there was no round one.

There was a round grill backing plate made but it was only used on the split convertible glove box doors. As others have said, the passenger side front fender just had four small slots for the grill mounting tabs. _________________ Chris

Resurrecting an old thread - On a Nov '52 Zwitter, on the passenger side front fender, I know there was an oval shape block off plate that went behind the grill. Was there an oval hole being covered on the passenger side or no hole cut in the passenger side fender?
Thanks,

Using the owners manuals can be a dicey proposition at best since they were so heavily retouched and reused and the cars photographed often had components painted a different color so it would photograph better. However, they can sometimes be helpful in showing when a certain detail first was introduced requiring a new photograph.
This same picture first appeared in the October '52 printing. It appears to be black behind the grill. They never took the time to paint the surface behind the round grill black so you could assume that they wouldn't have done it on the zwitter fenders either.
Based on that it seems pretty likely that they stamped both sides for grills and used the blanking plate from the beginning of the introduction of the oval horn grill.
There is some retouching on the picture, particularly on the fuse box and inspection cover so it is possible that they retouched the grill background but does seem unlikely.

On the left fender where the horn is placed behind the fender the hole only has the round grill and you can see the horn through the hole.
On the right fender there is no hole. there is only 4 tabs for the horn grill.
the covers on the picture below are for the split glovebox doors.
