Don't know about the 540, but your engine number will be under the fuel pump.

if it looks like this it's just years of dirt and oil, although the trans oil seems to gunk up worse

Is that a fancy kind of sump plate heater in that picture?

Also, I'm not exactly sure what the 540 itself signifies, but isn't the fact that it's on both sides a way of verifying that these are two factory matched case halves? Kind of like the numbers on connecting rods?

W1K1, I'm with you, and at first that's exactly what I thought it was but it's definitely not that kind of grease and grime. It seriously seems like the whole engine was painted gloss black and then undercoating was sprayed all over the bottom. It's not oily at all, just kind of rubbery - spray can undercoating style.

Mr. Strickland, I'll have another look under the fuel pump. I searched pretty well all along the upper side of the case joint, including trying to see under the fuel pump, but maybe I just didn't try hard enough. I'll try again - thanks for the advice!

D/A/N, I was kinda thinking the same thing. Maybe a dealer replacement for a blown engine?

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to even look at this thread, even more so to those of you who've been kind enough to reply. I really do appreciate every single comment. I need all the help I can get!

Take care,
-dan

Congrats on the beautiful car!! I sure didn't see many over there when I was stationed there in the late 80s. I can imagine they are even rarer now.

not fancy, same as all the others I've had on our Canadian aircooled

the 540 is just case half matching numbers, hopefully not a rebuilder like GEX.

Maybe someone was trying to cure an oil leak and sprayed it with sealer?

ok, progress report time!

i've been constantly tinkering and getting lots of little things squared away (pun intended), just not much photo worthy.

list of stuff done:

front seats dyed black until i can find an OG set (hated the light grey)
front left turn signal ground fixed
master cylinder brake switch wiring sorted
interior light grounds sorted
windshield washer bottle and hoses installed (thanks Joel!)
correct window cranks installed (again, thanks to Joel)
muffler gasket replaced
muffler/tailpipe painted with high heat paint to prevent rust (found out it's a Tri-Mil exhaust)
rear brakes checked and adjusted
more cleaning under engine/trans
rusty spots sanded and lightly primed for now
rear license plate holder made

and since i have off thru this Wednesday, and my cast is off, a lot more will be happening too!

both of my kids have been helping with this and that, and i'm really loving the chance to get them involved. of course, my son accidentally kicked the screws to my turn signal lens and now we can't find one of them, but i used it as a chance to teach him about how to *try* to find hardware that you've dropped in the grass or gravel. sometimes it just don't work though Embarassed . oh well, i'll get another screw.

take care,
-dan

Well, I'm still plugging away, trying to get my squareback registered, inspected, and on the road here. Complicated doesn't even begin to describe the process.

Anyway, I've been making things better on the car little by little. Recent work includes:

New front brake hoses
Adjusted the toe in
Checked and adjusted wheel bearings
Adjusted the torsion bar
Relocated fuel filter out of the engine room
Replaced fuel hose

Finally got temporary tags and took it for a spin, and now I have a new problem.

It spits and sputters, especially under a load. It's been converted to dual Webers, so maybe a rebuild is in order? Gonna put in new plugs and check the timing. It also has a Computer-Fire electronic ignition setup, and mechanical fuel pump, btw.

Anything else I should look at? What order would you guys recommend?

As always, thanks for your help folks!!!

Take care,
-dan

Oh yeah, if I get on the gas a bit, it runs great.
