I was pulled over today. According to the Sheriff " in the state of Arizona you cannot have items hanging from you inside rear view mirror"
I asked him if he was a student of another office I know. He asked how I know him. I worked with him. He told me to get out of here leave. Never checked my information.
It gives law enforcement resonable cause to stop you.

Number of years ago I got a warning in OH doing 4 over on the interstate in an 02 Buick Century. "You were coming around that curve a little fast don't you think?". clear, sunny day. sparse traffic (maybe a car every 1/2 mile) Pretty sure it was because I had IL plates.

or he just wanted to know who would be in a Buick Century going faster than 10 under the limit.

This applies to California drivers:

26708. (a) (1) A person shall not drive any motor vehicle with any
object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied
upon the windshield or side or rear windows.
(2) A person shall not drive any motor vehicle with any object or
material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied in or upon
the vehicle that obstructs or reduces the driver's clear view
through the windshield or side windows.

Yep, technically illegal, but most often used as "probable cause".

In reality, EVERY officer can EASILY come up with a probable cause to stop someone. Going too slow can be indicative of being "careful" because of too much alcohol. Going too fast is speeding, technically 1 mph over is speeding. Turning too wide or too tight, turn signal turned on 10 feet too close to the intersection whatever.

Up in Chino Valley the officers have their radar on full time. But at least it's not a scam-trap like Mayer or Star Valley.

Lol don't drive from a lot of places to cali. chicago requires a "city sticker" (that you pay for) that affixes to the inside of the windshield. Lots of subdivisions, state parks, etc do too. So where do Californians put the oil change reminder sticker?

As for chris rock, I read an article on yahoo about that and one of the cases he and his buddy were pulled over speeding in an orange Lamborghini. Speeding in an orange exotic, yea I'm sure they ONLY pulled him over for being black.

ASRS 28-959.01 12.b reads like this;
(b) Where the rearview mirror would commonly be positioned if the motor vehicle is without a windshield mounted rearview mirror.

B. Except as otherwise provided in this section, a person shall not operate a motor vehicle with an object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed or applied on the windshield or side or rear windows or with an object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed or applied in or on the motor vehicle in a manner that obstructs or reduces a driver's clear view through the windshield or side or rear windows.

I am like hmmm. Better remove my SAMBA sticker.

Did you get a ticket? Anytime a cop pulls you over and you dont get cited is like walking away from a crash landing

When I was stopped in Chino Valley AZ a few years ago along a lonely rural road, cop said I went through a stop sign, then 1/2 mile (really) later said I was going too slowly (no street light at intersection) and turned too wide (which by actuality would've put me in someone's front yard !!!).

He checked my papers, made me walk the line, the flashlight thing, all after I had asked for breath-lyzer test for alcohol once he accused me. He also asked twice why the tailgate of the Suburban had been repainted, and I wanted to tell him that it's my vehicle, and I can do anything I goddamm want to it; but I explained GM peeling with low-VOC paint instead. Once I blew 0.019, over 4 times below the limit, he let me go, no citations or warnings. Apparently he had some shred of integrity remaining, or just knew that the "geography" of the road would turn over his probable causes anyway. He was just fishing, like in gt1953's incident above.

Not even a little. Our little town of 450 has SIX police officers. Arithmetically that's 1 officer per 75 citizens. Yes, we are troublemakers up here. Actually its a retirement town. They swear its to protect us from the bikers and tourists.
That said, they pay for their police presence with speeding ticket revenue! 20MPH means 20! OK, well 22 or 23, but if you get ticketed its like $250, so go slow in your 36HP powered road machines and enjoy the scenery.

The kicker was that your turn signal was not on continuously. Something was obviously out of kilter there. He was right to stop you.

A recent added section:

Quote:
(b) This section does not apply to (12) A portable Global Positioning System (GPS), which may be mounted in a 7- inch square in the lower corner of the windshield farthest removed from the driver or in a 5-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield nearest to the driver and outside of an airbag deployment zone, if the system is used only for door-to-door navigation while the motor vehicle is being operated.

Also:

Quote:
(b) This section does not apply to any of the following:
(3) Signs, stickers, or other materials that are displayed in a
seven-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield farthest
removed from the driver, signs, stickers, or other materials that are
displayed in a seven-inch square in the lower corner of the rear
window farthest removed from the driver, or signs, stickers, or other
materials that are displayed in a five-inch square in the lower
corner of the windshield nearest the driver.

I think there are also exemptions for toll transponders.

Probably jinxing myself, but I currently have no front plate or bumper, prerequisite fuzzy dice on mirror, and stickers on my back side windows from parts vendors/suppliers, and I've never been hassled by police. That includes driving around in Arizona for a week.

Cops (mostly) dig VWs. Don't drive like an asshat, and they'll leave you alone.
