I have a few questions. Which primer is better, self-etchîng primer or epoxy primer on pure metal. Also, is ok to use primers that is from an auto supply store in aerosol form to prime my project while doing the bodywork myself? I am worried about them interacting with, let's say PPG paint or whatever the paint shop decides to use.

How are people priming there cars before having them painted.

Please use the search feature for "epoxy primer" and "etch primer"

That being said, 2 part epoxy is your best bet to safeguard against corrosion.

During the project, etch primer is better than nothing but will not be good at long term rust protection. 2 part aerosol epoxy can be found at Eastwood. Use the discount found here on the forum for Samba members.

Use PPG's tech sheets to determine compatibility.

The guy who applies the paint PROBABLY will apply a seal coat before doing the color. This seal coat is non-porous, and can go over all kinds of different stuff and be ok. So I figure you might have a mix of old paint and sanding primer and a few spots of spot putty and that's fine, the seal coat will cover it all the same as long as it's sanded even.

Bare metal should have epoxy primer on it as a first coat in any critical area, then spray sanding primer over it right away. 2k Sanding primer can go right over metal too and it STICKS fine but if you get a chip right there the rust may crawl under the paint and chip and bubble.

Sanded or slightly rusty metal does not need to be etched, but if it is very smooth then may want to etch.
There was such a thing as "etching epoxy primer" too but I think it went out of style for being too toxic!!!

My learning is a few years out of date because the technology changes, but it probably is still valid. All the stuff I did RIGHT still looks great. A lot of stuff that wasn't done right is now peeling off. PREP matters!
