|
|
My ex wife has debt collectors from before and after our marriage. She has never lived at the address I am at but for years I constantly get mail from collectors. I know her address and I put it on the envelope along with "Return to sender" I leave a note in the mail box that I'm the only person at this address but the postal worker does not care and shoves anything with that address in the box. I've tried explaining nicely to the mail person but it's someone different every other month. I am moving and when I put a change of address form in I don't want her crap coming to the new house. Can I submit a change of address for her or is that not legal? _________________ Schrodinger's cat walked into a bar and it didn't.

Why not ask your post office, then you will get a real answer rather than interweb guesses ? _________________ Rick

Just throw it away. It's not your letter carriers job to pick out the stuff he thinks you don't want.
Filing a COA for someone without their permission is technically illegal, but when you move simply complete the form as an "individual" and only that exact name should be forwarded. It's also possible to have her name filed as MLNA (moved left no address) but that's only marginally effective. Done in tandem and your problem shouldn't follow you, until the debt collectors figure it out. |

Sorry but your name (and any future address) will always be attached to her name as far as debt collectors go - they will go after anyone that has ever associated with her. I get debt collections notices for my wife's ex-boyfriend more than 10 years after they last lived together. I throw it all away. One fun afternoon I even had a repo man show up to my house to collect a bmw motorcycle that he never paid for. _________________ Wish List:

If they did it successfully, they did it illegally, and if they are smart, not likely to post on the web that they did.
My brother's ex did the same thing to me (punishment for being related I guess). Bills and bill collectors were in my mailbox and on my porch for quite awhile, it took a few years to convince all parties she never lived there. Sorry you are going through that, but "its a process". |

I think recycling would be considered destruction of the mail which is against the law. |

Post Office throws away lot of "Junk" mail that for some reason can not be delivered such as a vacant house. Only 1st class mail gets forwarded or returned to sender. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

not at all. If it's in your mailbox, it's yours. No matter who's name is on it.
You don't need to contact the Post Office because you already have |

Anything that didn't appear to be junk I would throw back in the nearest mailbox with a line from an Elvis tune scrawled on it:
"Return to Sender. Addressee Unknown".
After regularly doing that, most of the people who were trying to find my brother's ex, gave up. The guys ringing my doorbell late at night looking for her required a few calls to the cops to get them to cease and desist. |

My dad would simply move. His friends and family would get a note with his new address. Post office was never involved. _________________ my59: Well son, my grandfather died before I got to drive it, so does that answer your question?

That would be pretty effective as well. Just let the people and companies you want mail from know your new address, and little else will follow.
Tampering with mail is all about other peoples mailboxes, not your own. Mail ceases to be "mail" when the customer takes it out of their mailbox, so don't worry about throwing ANYTHING away that comes to your box, even if it doesn't have your name on it.
That being said, if you get your neighbors mail by accident, destroying it is a real dick move, but it isn't a crime. |

Mark it DECEASED and put it back in the mailbox. That should cut down on some of it. |

And you could end up in Federal Prison for a terrorist threat or attempt. Something like that would not be considered a joke and would be seriously prosecuted. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

Absolutely the best way to handle this is to put in a change of address for your FAMILY.
When her mail arrives at your new place, then deal with it.
More problems are created by a COA then will be solved. About 10 years back I had an apartment I rented in my house. I had students stay here who were going through an 8 week course at a local tech school.
One moron had his mail forwarded to my address while he was attending this course. When the course was over and he went back home he stopped the mail forwarding.
Unfortunately the post office then sent ALL the mail to him - far away in another state. After several weeks I got a call from him that he was sending me a box full of my mail that had come to him.
A lot of time sensitive material didn't get to me on time.
I ended up having to do a COA for my mail from his address to mine!
Now, 10 years latter I still receive mail for him from time to time.
Many of the people who work for the USPS today don't give a rat's ass and couldn't use their brain cell to get out of a wet paper bag. So expecting the post office to do something effective for you in this (or any other) case is probably out of the question.
File a COA for all your mail and simply continue to mark her stuff "not at this address" and drop it back in the mail box. Thats your best protection! _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |
