Does anyone know if type 4 77mm domed pistons can be used for a 1200 36 HP build using stock cylinders? Has anyone tried that combination? I recently found 2 piston. The box is marked HEPOLITE REF SW 12786 77 M/M Type 4 Volkswagen.
Thanks,
Bob

77mm pistons don't sound like type 4....the smallest I've read about is the 87,5mm ones for the 1600cc Super Vees

If you mean typ1. Than yes. They can be used if they are 40hp 1200. the 77 1300 are not that easy.l 22mm piston pin!
The compression hight is little different. But i like it more when the piston backspace is little lower. 1-1.2mm in such a combo is perfekt.

I also thought 77 MM was only made for 1200 36 & 40 HP with the smaller piston pins. The box that the pistons came in is made to hold 4 pistons. Maybe that is why the number 4 is present on the box?

@ Slow 1200,
Yes, When we switched over from F VEE to Super V we started with the Type 3
engine and then later used the Type 4, with the 87.5mm piston & cylinders to make it a 1.6 that were supplied from VWOA from their racing director Mr. Hoppen.

Unfortunately do to health problems, I have not done much work on any projects for the last year. I am being treated for Psoriatic Arthritis. What is really strange is I must have had it and not known it for years. At 70 I started having major pain and then Shingles about a year ago. I am getting meds including infusions. Hopefully I will be able to get back in the shop full time soon.

Those are NOT VW pistons. I could be wrong, but they look suspiciusly similar to NSU TT pistons.
