|
|
I was changing my starter and I found these two red wires coming through the side of the car resting right above the rear wheel on the passenger side of the car. I don't know where they go.
It's a '72 super beetle.
thanks for any advice!

Best thing to do is get down and trace them back to where they connect to. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

Seeing as they are red, you should trace them or at least insulate the ends. Red wires in these cars usually have 12v+ constant. |

A shiny new nickel says they go to the (probably long since removed) factory diagnostic plug. The solid red went from the 50 terminal on the starter solenoid, to the 50 terminal on the diagnostic plug. The red with white stripe went from the 30 terminal on the starter solenoid to the "+" terminal on the plug.
If you actually still have that diagnostic plug, might as well go ahead and just plug them back up to the starter solenoid. If you don't have that plug, be best to insulate those ends or at least (as mentioned above) trace them back to wherever they go and make sure the other ends aren't shorting against the chassis anywhere. _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.

that's got to be what they are for. they aren't hot and I don't have any shorts. I have almost all the electrical figured out in my beetle, this was pretty much the last few rouge wires.
thanks again! |

But they are coming out on the passenger side. The diagnostic plug was in the engine compartment on the drivers side top left corner. At least that is where the 74 model's plug is. Did a 72 have that diagnostic plug? |

they are on the passenger side because those are the connectors at the starter's end. _________________ cars:

72-73 generator cars had the 2 diagnostic wires (ignition switch and battery) to the starter like that, alternator cars only had 1 , B+ was sourced elsewhere. _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?
