Has anyone messed around with building their own firewalls with alternative materials? Like galvanized or copper sheating or something? Or do you frown on that? The kits seem cheap and easy but I want something different. Kinda ratty. |

If I was to do it, polished stainless or damascened aluminum would be my choice. _________________ 1965 Type 1 sunroof Baja / about 70k miles on self-rebuilt '74 1600 and counting / SP heads and aftermarket valve keepers / non-doghouse shroud with external cooler and filter / 1.5 qt extended sump / Weber 32/36 DFAV progressive carb / 009 dist with Pertronix / 1.25 ratio rockers and ball adjusters / 1.5" stainless steel J-pipes and carbon steel baja exhaust |

Thanks for your replies. Not sure what I'll do. My bug is kind of a patina ratty style. I thought it might be cool to do something like that for the firewall. |

Go to a junk car or scrap metal yard and have a look around.
Might find something from an old car or truck, or even something architectural/industrial to re-purpose like a heating/cooling grate.
Antique malls or flea markets would be another good place to look, any flat sheet stock that's heat resistant you can easily cut and form.
How about decorative tin ceiling tiles?
Or a layer of old license plates?
Cut up and folded Beer or Oil advertising sign? _________________ -Bruce

I can get you a patina ratty fan shroud (my engine caught fire)
The fire didn't seem to do much to the firewall, though. Maybe that's why they call it that ?

So this is what I decided on. It's 36"X18" and I need 35"X16". So just a little but of cutting and it should sit sweet. Of course you won't be able to read the whole thing but you'll see just enough to know what it is. The engine is out and being rebuilt so I'll put this in sometime next week. Pretty excited.

Will the paint on that stand up to the temps? It would be a bit ironic for your firewall to catch on fire... |

It would. It would still look cool though. Maybe I should burn it first. |

Nah, VW engine heat's not gonna hurt that sign at all. If anything might darken next to any hot spots, but that would still be cool.
I say mount it upside down so it reads backwards too, you want to make it look like it was done out of necessity.
Also throws people off and they have to look twice. _________________ -Bruce
