I purchased this 1968 square back from my buddy Kris. It had no motor a bad transmission and every body panel on it had damage! This square was the year I was borne and my favorite VW. To me the good out weighed the bad. I will start this thread with a few picks when I first got it.

The pictures actually do it Justice. Lol☺ First order of business was to get it ruining. I was putting this motor together as a spare for the notch. Since the EFI motor in the notch came to life and runs awesome this motor went into the square.

Thanks Bob, how you and Sue been? This vw addiction is coming back strong. I thought it was bad as a teen but now realize at 46 it's just as bad. Smile

Just like any addiction you step away from, If you go back, it's always worse than before. Laughing
That's a nice Square. I like the 3 tone variegated look. Smile

Is that a standard T3 front beam? Those tires look pretty tucked.

So in the beginning I mentioned a bad trans. Well I thought I could live with it popping out of first and second gear but I was wrong. After getting it running I realized the Trans need to be rebuilt. So out came the motor and the trans. The Trans went off the the springs for a rebuild by Mr. Gas. While he had it I decided to have him install short axles. I already knew I was running 5.5 sprints in the back and they would rub so now was the perfect time to do the short axle swap.

Ok so now my square is running smooth, shifting smooth, and all body panel's are feeling smooth. I have been driving and enjoying her as much as I can. What I did next will shock some people and others will understand. I striped her to bare shell! Laughing

Yes the pans where rust free and so where the rockers. You are the first to ask for the color and I ain't big on secret 's the color is going to be a one year only 1960 type one color Flint Grey.

Looks like you had the start of a harlequin Squareback IF you repainted the individual fenders and doors their original colors. Wink The parts look straight and rustfree though, so that's a big plus. Cool

Very true Bob. My goal was to find the straightest rust free correct body panel's I could. The only thing on it not correct for 1968 is the rear hatch. This was done purposely due to the fact I hate the licence plate light on late model squares.

glad my old square is getting the love it needed. yes, it was rust free but somebody (dumbass) gave it the "Cal look" treatment before I bought it, one piece windows, bondo over the trim holes etc. the square was a local car, bought at centennial motors in Denver. now, if I can just convince leo to put a subie motor it in, all the kool kids are doing that!! Twisted Evil

here's the day I brought it home in 07..
