Thanks gentlemen I appreciate the knoladge and words of encouragement. Since I can't do much with the gaps right now I have moved on to color sanding and buffing my new paint. Since I refuse to give the paint shop any more of my money and have decided to learn the body work and paint peocess myself for future restorations I figured I might as well start with the color sanding and buffing of my new paint. Although the orange peal and dust nibs are minimal nun the less they are there. so today I dove right in I started with the top of the drivers front fender. I hit it with 2000 sand paper wet with soppy watter. Let me tell you sanding my new paint job was nervracking I sanded till all the orange peal was gone. After the 2000 I then hit it with,2500 after that it was buffed with a compound then with a polish and a difrent pad. For not ever doing this befor and only reeding the thred hear on the samba it turned out really sweet. I had time to sand the hood but didnt get a chance to hit it with the buffer yet. I have to say I'm happy with the results so far. I thought the paint looked good befor but now it looks incredible.

Watch the edges and the "peak" on the hood. Painter's tape is your friend on protecting the edges from burn through.

Cutting and buffing is more a mastery of patience than anything else. I usually go 2000, 2500, 3000, then heavy cut compound, polish, swirl remover, machine glaze.

Take it slow and easy. Next car I am forcing you to paint yourself! Very Happy

I would- both as a reminder that it's there and to avoid burning through the paint.

After 20+ yrs of self employment I've learned to screw things up before getting a slow job, of meager quality. .. These boards and members really care about helping !
I promise to screw my car up a few times, and fix it again "it will still cost less and my mercy on others to return my ride will be less stressful"..
Trams a funny guy....lol. I've cracked up a few times today reading his posts over his yrs here.

After the top of the drivers front fender went so well I decided to do the hood. It's all sanded down with no more dust nibs and no more orange peal. Tomorrow I will hit it with the 2500 and the cut and polish. Will post picks when I'm done with the hood. I was scared at first but after the fender went well I got excited.

YES!!! Applause

And you were going to pay the paint clowns how much extra to do this? You are probably doing a better job because it's your car and you care.

Gentlemen thanks for the words of encouragement I really appreciate it.. Paint clowns!!! Love it Tram. Laughing they wanted an extra $ 700.00 to color sand and buff. I have to agree about doing a better job. The more I do the better I get. No more picks for a while as I have broke my camara lens on the back of my phone. Not sure how that happend but I'm sure while I was rolling around the floor trying to get the bottom of the pannels i mus of smashed it. Any way what do I do about the luvers in the back quorters how do I successfully buff them out after getting the orangepeal out? Any suggestions would help.

All the edges/ridges etc just get hand sanded & hand waxed, so you don't ruin the paint with the buffer! Exclamation

Thanks Mike, what would I need to sand down to in order to hand wax all the scrarches out? Right now I start with 1200 gets all the orangepeal and dirt nibs out then 2000 after that 2500. Then the Dimond cut with a wool pad after that a polish with a stireafome pad.

How much is to much? I have about 16 hours into the color sanding and buffing now and what i have done has turned out incredible. But how much is to much. The parts around the windows have orange peal do I spend the time hand sanding and polishing those areas don't want to hit it with the buffer as I don't want to burn threw the edges I could spend months on just this process alone. I need to get inside the car so I can sand all the interior so i can paint under the dash inside of the rockers and rear panels and por the pan and install dynomat still so much to do.

How much is too much? Is it done yet? No, then you've still got more work to do. It's not a race, no matter how bad you want to move on to other things.

Yes, you should sand those areas too. Keep in mind that as you progressively get finer with the sanding grit, the poishing gets easier. In those areas, get after it with the 2500 or 3K paper, then compound it by hand if you're worried about burn thru. Otherwise, don't stay on it very long,

So for what they charged, they only basically shot the outside? Definitely must have een a collision shop, and were doing it for the money. I only say that, as they should have shot the inside for what they charged you.
Since they didn't do it, and you have to, you probably should have finished "their job" before doing the cut and buff. That way any overspray would get removed when you did the wet sanding on the outside. Might as well stop what you're doing, and get after the inside spraying before you get too far along.

Bob, the interior did get painted. All the visible areas any way. I just want to do under the dash a little better. Not sure how much the carpet will cover under there. And after seeing MonT3 car I figured I would cote all of the interior panels that won't be seen just for protection and be couse I have about a gallon of extra paint. I have the whole pasanger side to do the roof and around all the windows so basically the whole top of the car.

Well I finished up late last night so didn't take picks. I will add some tomorrow. So now that the paint is right I will tackle the gaps with help from the sambe, Tram, and Bob. Just wanted to give a big thanks to all for your suggestions and words of encouragement.

I'm back! Had to walk away from the square for a week. After color sanding and buffing for way to long and still not happy with the final out come I had to walk away. I had a difrent set of tires put on the rims and now the square is running so not a total loss in the last week. Today I'm going to start gluing in the insulation so I can get on that headliner. After monts install coming out so good I think im ready to tackle it. Just need to work on something other than paint and body gaps for a while.
