After getting the beam back in, I realized that I should be able to use the Thing front beam braces, I plan to use some flat steel stock, drill four holes in it (two for the braces & two for the pan to body bolts) once it's bolted to the pan I'll then weld the steel piece to the pan & then bolt the braces to it (after cleaning them up).

The bad part of cleaning & painting any part that you are working on is that every part that attaches to it must go through the same process or it looks that much worse. I really didn't want to do a nut & bolt restoration on this beast but since I have them off...

Don't do it HERC, one thing leads to another & it makes your project take longer. Confused By the way, what are you working on? I was curious & looked up your profile & didn't see anything current, your last ride was sweet though, as the others said, once you're bitten by the bug you'll always be back, glad to see you're back.

& the part was already off, I might as well make it nice too because once it was on, I'm not taking it back off to clean it up.

Here it is with brake parts assembled, I installed the rear wheel cylinder on the front as prescribed by Dustymojave & others.

LOL! I'm looking at doing the exact same thing on the T3 parts for my rail today. I need to finish getting my sand blaster hooked up to the air compressor first though. I ruined my last good wire wheel on cleaning the crud off the drums yesterday. Trying to clean 40+ years of mud, crud and asbestos dust is never fun. I hope mine come out looking as good as yours did.

Hey GoMopar440 (I can't shorten that without insulting a true moper fan) your rail is looking great, did you source rear T3 brakes? Do you have a blast cabinet? If so ORANGECRUSHer had a great idea that I employed for a filtration system.

I bought a whole '68 T3 car(ish) thingy for the drive train and brake parts. It's one of the ugliest cars I've ever seen, but the parts I want off of it aren't too bad. So far the rear brakes on it are in better shape than bug parts on my rail. Runs and drives with a good clear title, not bad for $500 IMHO. I just have to close my eyes while I'm working on it. Do you have a link to OC's sandblast cabinet filtration system? I've got the large HF floor model and it has air leaks like the smaller HF table top blast cabinet I used to have. I'll be pulling the glass and sealing it with silicone which should take care of most of the leakage. With the bigger compressor I'm now running, the whole cabinet swells up a little bit when I'm using the blaster. I have a couple shop vacs I was thinking about dedicating one for a dust collector on the blast cabinet, but I haven't come up with a plan on how to build one yet.

BTW: No problem on the name, just use whatever you feel comfortable with. I'm not very thin skinned so getting my user name abbreviated doesn't bother me in the slightest. As long as I can figure out you're talking to me is all I need to know.

That is an excellent candidate for parts, you're doing it a service.

As far as the water filtration goes, I used a 5 gallon bucket & several fittings found in the shop vac accessories of the hardware store.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I cut a 3' section of 2" wand down & Swiss cheesed the end of it to maximize air to water contact & reduce agitation, the hose to the shop vac is the high point & the hose from the blast cabinet goes to the center hole with the extension to the bottom of the bucket.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

It's quite effective in removing particulate, I try not to aim the blast nozzle towards the cabinets exhaust port in order to reduce the loss of blast media, it's heavier & tends to settle in the cabinet while the rest gets vacuumed out. I put the other disc in there to try to reduce the amount of agitated water getting sucked up by the shop vac. Once you get the filtration system on, make sure you remove the air inlet plug on the back of the cabinet, it sounds as if you might still have this on if the cabinet is swelling up, if you don't remove it before turning the vac on, you'll suck th gloves off the inside of the cabinet Evil or Very Mad

Thanks for the tip on the water filtration system. Doesn't look too hard to duplicate with the parts I already have on hand. Finding a 5 gallon bucket will probably be that hardest part for me. The wife snags all of them for her projects whenever she sees them around. Rolling Eyes

I'm trying to enjoy it while I can. Old man winter isn't too far away from making another extended stayover. We usually get our first snow right before halloween. Shocked

I got the drivers side beam support cleaned, painted & installed
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Then I made the plate to extend to the beam support.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

& got it bolted in place, I'll eventually weld it to the pan & relocate the brake line mount to the leading edge of the bracket.

& here it is from underneath.

This is a really cool thread! Thanks for taking the time to document and take pictures of everything. That bug is going to be sweet!

Hey, I use the Hobart Handler 140 that I've had for 6 years now. I converted it to shielding gas and I couldn't be happier with the welds. It definitely has its sweet spot in the Voltage and Wire speed settings, but overall the Hobart really is a great little 115V welder.

I used it exclusively on my mini buggy and custom trailer build. If your welder has the option to convert then I highly recommend it!

*Sorry, I edited my post to include a link instead of a picture of my ride in your thread.* Embarassed

Thanks Sandjunky, that's a cool buggy you've built & I like your rail too. I'll eventually convert the welder but I'm still works ng my way through a large spool of wire.

Here's the drivers side brake line, the original flare nuts are in good condition so I'll cut them off & reuse them on the new line I'm going to make.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

After cutting them off I slid one onto the new brake line & then positioned the line into the brake line flaring tool clamp bar by lining up the line to the depth step on the mandrel.
