Thanks for the encouragement, now go do something to yours. Ten minutes here or a half hour there will eventually add up to serious time spent towards getting it to where you want it. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Again, thanks! I really didn't want to do a full resto while trying to get it back together but while I had it completely apart it seemed silly to toss it back together without some proof of what was done but there again, one Thing leads to another. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Cool caravan but finishing it first is kinda like putting the cart ahead of the horse isn't it? _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Since I plan to use factory length brake hose (for ease of replacement), I'm making the brake line longer, to determine the length it needs to be, I jacked up the front & turned the wheel hard lock to the right to make sure the brake hose had some slack.
Then I cut the line roughly 1/4" longer to compensate for the flare end. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I got the brake lines done for both sides (it only takes 10-15 minutes to fab them up, but it takes much longer when trying to take pics & load those pics). I installed a new master cylinder & got excited about the prospect of being able to drive the beast for the first time (master cylinder was seized & nothing worked). However once I added fluid & started trying to bleed the system, I heard a "squirt/shluck" noise every time I depressed & released the brake pedal.
I pulled the floor mat back & confirmed my suspicions, I'm not done fabricating brake lines yet. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Here's the source of my fluid leak.
And while removing the rest of the line, I found where someone had used one of those damned compression fittings. Considering how easy it is to fabricate brake lines, there is no reason to use these, they are dangerous. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I finally got to fab up the brake line to the rear, here's the front.
Here's the line going towards the rear.
And perhaps the most aggravating fastener on the car, the flare nut to the T junction above the rear torsion housing.
Unfortunately, it looks like I'll be replacing floor pans too. So keep tuned in to see how I replace them without body removal. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Well, I lied. I finally had a chance to do some work on the beast this morning (since the samba was down). I decided to remove the body to replace the pans.I unbolted the body to remove it only to find that the previous owner welded his pan patch panels to the passenger rocker (grrr).

So I cut a slot in his patch job with a die grinder so I could finesse a sawzall blade into & separated the pan from the body. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Got the body off finally.
After removing the pedal assembly & my new brake line, I removed the pedal stop & saved it. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Are you going to have to do repairs to the rocker/heater channel of the body to fix where you had to cut the weld? _________________ Richard

Hey, Richard. Technically, no, I was able to strategically wield the sawzall so as not to damage the rocker. However, the rear package shelf & some other parts were pretty rough.
There's the package tray on top of the trans. While the body is usable, I'm going to shelve it for now, I've got another to slip over the pan. Unfortunately I will be removing the widened beam & going to a class 11 look while retaining the thing arms & spindles.
Here's the carpet threatening to dump the "speaker box" on everything below. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Did you put your Bug on Jennie Craig? Trying to lose a few pounds?
Or as I heard a guy say on a video making fun of ricers...
"Got a few rust spots. Let that shit go, drop a few pounds."

Only if that diet was Swiss cheese. To
I started by cutting the front section of the floor out, trimming close to the flange along the tunnel & "nepoleans hat".
This crappy pic shows just how bad the floors were.
Then I carefully cut between the seat track & the tunnel flange because I intend on reusing the original seat tracks because the aftermarket ones suck in both quality & fit. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Finally, I got the remnants of the pan cut off.
The next step, for me anyway, is to chisel the leftover strip of the old pan off of the flange. I always hated looking at a car that someone put pans in & left that little jagged piece of rusty metal.
This also makes sure that you have something substantial to weld the new pans to. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.
