As the population of Westfalia Essen Trailers increase in the US - I thought it best to start a "hub" for the info on parts and a place to show off yours.

At present I have two for my personal use. I will be "importing" ten for those that may be interested in one.

Ive also been fortunate enough to find OG Westfalia trailer hitches for Bay Window Buses to pull with.

Here is some shots of what I have now.

Thank you for this. I don't think I used the word in the post, but I would've gotten it wrong. I've had mine for too long in a dis-assembled state, when I got it the CELLASTO units were completely blown out. The frame is powder-coated beige.

I want to use stainless steel metric carriage bolts for reassembly. And paint the plywood floor top and bottom with truck-bed liner. Are those good ideas?

Just asking to turn on reply notifications.

Making it look as stock as possible is always the best in my opinion. Sometimes its hard depending on what you have left to restore. These were utility trailers meant to haul some harsh, heavy stuff - and then most times left to the elements. Not many survive that don't have some sort of "owner improvement".

I think you have a great plan except for the bed liner. I would choose to restore the wood to look like the original color and cover the floor in a rubber mat so as not to worry about gashing or scuffing.

If this is to be used as intended - hauling whatever all the time then make it as you will, but if you want to showcase it behind a classic car - then I think it needs to be classic as well. It should hold a higher value if it looks restored to factory spec if you should sell one day.

I follow these rules because I tow behind a classic and like to keep the appearance of how it was back in the day Cool

Mine's pretty complete, except for a small chunk missing from one fender's trailing edge. And the rack on top has a monogram M on the sides. That's how I knew it was made for me.

Since I hadn't thought about this for a while, I updated. I like Plastidip S, so now it's rubber floormat on top and thick, peelable sheet of satin black Plastidip on the bottom, against the beige powdercoated frame.

What's the best way to refinish the zinc coating on the steel frame?

I'm going for Re-vertable. I couldn't drive without my 5-panel Wink mirror and Hella H-4s.

Here are the two canopy type tops. One is a rigid design with a frame that is meant to sit inside the trailer without the lid-hard top on. The second is also designed for the same but is meant to sit outside the box on the lip. Its neat feature is that the frame comes apart like a tent pole frame. I see this second types feet also modified to sit on top of the hard top covering the rack and lid under it.

Here is the rigid frame type.

This last is an earlier example with the tent top cover added with the feet modified to set on top of the hard lid. Notice the trademark Westfalia rack bars.

Thanks for that. The lidless version seem more utilitarain. Do measured drawings exist?

The plywood box and angle iron frame is in good shape on mine, but the carriage bolts holding everything together were badly rusted.

Should replacements be metric?

Would stainless steel be over-restoring it?

I would put generic - US stainless in mine - no matter what shape it was in. I used US Stainless from Home Depot to hang the spare tire carrier.

Thanks. Last I checked Eugene Fastener had metric stainless available.

You don't think it would affect the resale value? Smile

Figured I better start watching this thread as the new owner of an Essen trailer. Wink

Also, just a quick google search yielded this website for parts. Jason, you use these guys before or having any comments on them? I figure listing the resources too would be helpful.

I have never dealt with them direct - but have heard good things. The prices are pretty much in line with anywhere else you can get the stuff.

Have you, Jason, or anyone else for that matter located parts lists or diagrams? I'm on the hunt as I type this.

I have not or do not know of any parts diagram for these trailers. Companies like you listed are the only ties to these trailers I know of or have. Other than Facebook threads that dedicate their space to all Westfalia Trailers.

I hope you find some Cool

Off to a good start. Are you wanting all stock or tweaking it to your liking here and there?

Love the westy rack bar on the lid Cool

Over the nest couple months I plan on filling in some of the details on this small, light versitile little trailer. Ive come to know it quite well with several imports from Europe to the states and then selling them. Its allowed me to keep two - well accessorised examples and sell 13 others off to individuals in the states - well 11 as I have two left.

So I hope to show what can be done all at onve here - for all Ive learned. Overseas purchase, what accessories come on them, what the costs are involved and any other questions in between

Hello, I have recently imported two Essen trailers to the states and in the process of getting them back to original condition (reasonably speaking)! Looking for original (or similar) detachable cover hinges and front hasp. Any recommendations where I can find something suitable?

Westfalia Essen.

Finally, I would like to discuss the type of 'Essen'. This was indicated by Westfalia as Reisegepäckanhänger or simply baggage trailer, and was nothing more and nothing less. A relatively inexpensive trailer, well built but very light and easy to store thereby attracted a large audience of buyers. It was in fact the lightest implementation of a range of timber trailers in different weight classes and for different purposes. The characteristics: inner dimensions 118.5 x 88.5 x 39.5 cm, weight 60 kg, a total weight of 400 kg, 8 inch wheels. Light metal profiles with plywood sheets (depending on the year of manufacture "nature", or "mahogany" pickled), the bottom is of 12 mm plywood. Steel or aluminum support bracket to the rear to make it possible to put the trailer upright path, and the wheels can be folded in one piece, by loosening the bolts of the celastoveren. There was a whole list of accessories. Standard was an open trailer without rear door (which there was little heavier types). A tarp was available as a simple conclusion. Better was a lid lock, hinged on one side and removable. This could optionally be provided with a railing (up to ca.1974) or a roof rack (after), and even of a holder for a boat (canoe?). For those who wanted to carry bigger things, there was a tilt available. Because these fans are mostly built in the 70s (production period around 1966 to 1981), they fit perfectly behind a panorama or a beetle. Type tilt not only space big advantage, but you can see the trailer on the rear of your bus; lower versions not!

Of all the supporters this is the most popular in (for example) VW Bus owners. This is evidenced among other things, from the Westfalia Register.
