Hello,
I'd like to know if this damage should be or even can be cut out and patched somehow (haven't noticed sheet metal in this area) e.g. welded, or if I should just buy a new old same-year sliding door? I'm having a guy do some welding for the rear corners / battery tray area anyway but would just like to get a sense of what I should do about this area. As you can see if you look closely, there's some daylight coming in!
On the outside it's less obvious...there's some rust just under the window that you can see but it's way worse looking on the inside.
Thank you!

If I were you, I'd get a new door. This could be a rust free area, with wrinkle free OG metal, perfectly straight, no filler, in the time it would take to remove and replace the door.
Now, if it were for a hard to find part for say, a barndoor, that would be different. It looks like you have a baywindow, though. Should be easy enough to find a good one.

If bus parts are available at a reasonable price and you did not weld/fabricate it yourself ,replacing is the better option if you can find a door that is in good condition.
If you have to hunt all over and pay a classic car price then have it patched up. _________________ My beetle is not competing with your beetle. I have the yellow beetle in my town. There is a red one, a green one ......

Thank you both - very much. This is exactly what I was hoping you'd say. _________________ 1970, Riviera, 1600 cc type I [single port] |
