Ah, yes. I have complete confidence in that. I mean just try and show me ONE time that they havent put our money to good use???...
Hey, whaddya gonna do. As Lisa said, at least it wasnt you that is now gone. Ah true. And it is just one more adventure story to add to the life of this bus.
And to think, there was a time when i told people owning a bus was easy... So young. So naive.
george is back at the family cabin and happy to be in the trees. New Plates on, ready to be torn into. Wrenchin party later
For now, it's brew day...good ol' american style Pilsner on the stove now.

I like your positive attitude here. It very sad that Ray lost his life thru the heart attack and that you've lost your $ in the process.
As someone once told me "you have to go thru the crappy times to REALLY appreciate the good times!"
Just a suggestion- Look for someone near you that has experience wrenching on these buses. It's possible to repair that broken exhaust stud. You could then have them access the overall health of the engine. Maybe do a compression test, etc.. You may find the engine has many thousands of miles left in it.
These old VW buses can be made to be reliable. When I bought my 70', I went thru all it's systems (electrical, brakes, wheel bearings, axles, transmission rebuilt, front suspension rebuilt, etc). It's first camping trip was almost 1k miles w/zero issues though it was REALLY underpowered at high elevation. It ran great overall.
Keep posting here as you need help. Plenty of nice guys willing to help out. |
Absolutely. Will be doing the stud and everything else myself from here on out. Honestly, after a few months straight of wrenching on it, i was just burned out and i got the offer from Ray to rebuild it for a good price and just figured "why not" as i had some cash to throw that way. But alas, now i am rested up and ready to wrench again and short on cash so a good time to learn. Especially as i have time now and we have another vehicle to travel in so i dont feel quite as pressured to get the wife immediately on the road in the bus.
Onward we go! _________________ ..."I live in my own little world. but it's ok, they know me here." -L. Myracle |

Some how I totally missed this. Sorry man...at least you're in good spirits. That's the only way to be! Did you come up with a plan yet? Pull it, pull off the top end and install those heads? _________________ __________

Ah, the million dollar question....
A plan.
Well, since most of our plans have come and gone right out the window without much of a recognition of measurable success, we are hesitant to make any plans, just taking it all as it comes, one moment to the next.
We have done a bit of travelling but on the bikes. Havent even looked at the bus since it got home.
I have been in contact with another engine builder and now that i have the heads, the cost is a bit more (relatively) better sounding but i just cant drop the cash this close to losing that chunk. There is a very slight chance that we may get a partial refund of the funds but i am not holding my breath.
So for now, we have a few weeks of not much going on so the plan is - pull the exhaust, see if we cant get those studs to come out with a puller, change out those o-rings that you so elequently pointed out to me , do a little more wrenching and get back on the road, at least baby steps.
Long term - Save a little cash and hopefully get the engine rebuilt later. Probably save those heads for then as they need a little work done to them.
I dont know at this point.
Just take it as it comes. Cant get any worse at this point, right?

I got a little antsy the last few days while staring at the bus.
It is just sittin there...
So went to work after the wife found a steal on craigslist. A mechanic was offloading his personal tool collection after he just upgraded - 12 drawers full of metric and standard ratchet sets, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc other hand tools, compression testers, timing lights, multimeters, pipe expanders, and tons of other auto tools including the rolling box for a mere 300 bux!
It was enough to get me motivated...
Got the F pipe pulled with little difficulty considering the rust weld on the back half of the exhaust but the sheared studs came out so easily it was almost a hand turn out.
Then went to work on the shifter bushing, a few steering components and other odds and ends on my long list. Sway bar tomorrow.
And just for kicks, sat up too quickly and took a chunk out of my head thanks to the ladder on the rear hatch... Swore so profusely the dog ran and hid.
New stuff ordered from german supply... I see the exhaust nut torque is 16 ft/lb, correct? Does the new stud need any loctite or anything?
Also, question about the heater boxes - as far as support pieces, i see one near the back of the box, is there another as well?
I aso see the PO did the 'special thermostat delete' modification... For the spring failsafe position, the tab near the spring goes to the rear, correct? (Pic will follow)
Overall a nice day that renewed my faith... _________________ ..."I live in my own little world. but it's ok, they know me here." -L. Myracle

This is correct, yes?
Tab pushed forward towards front of vehicle = flaps closed?
Tab is up, pulled all the way back towards the rear of the vehicle = flaps open?

That is correct.
The thermostat contracts pulls on the cable and closes the flaps.
The thermostat expands and releases the cable and under spring pressure opens flaps.

Well, there are probably tons of reasons why i should sell george but lately there are many small reasons and one recent big personal reason why I have to put a few toys up on the block to see what i can recover.
Sometimes, ya Gotta move forward.
Hang tight.... Maybe more later... _________________ ..."I live in my own little world. but it's ok, they know me here." -L. Myracle |

Just going back & rereading post, very entertaining. Did not think this was that funny before, but it caught me tonight.
(My new favorite photo for my friends when they ask how it is to drive the bus. "Great!" I say, "it is always open road in front of us. Nobody ever holds us up!")

buttoning up a few things more the next few days and then re-packing the bus, maybe a little lighter this time (benefit of traveling by motorcycle is you quickly learn what you should carry and what you need to leave at home to just enjoy the trip...)
Planning on a little trip ahead...
We have somewhat of a timeline to follow but some room for exploration.
next week we will be starting down in yuba city, ca after visiting some family. Going to beeline it straight across to the coast and work our way up highway 1/101 into oregon. No real destination except over to Bend for labor day and a ben harper concert with some friends. Then shooting up to the great city of Portland to finally get some homebrew to a beer lover in that city (xevin) while simultaneously tasting every brew in that town that is humanly possible. After that we will shoot down the coast again and eventually cut over back towards Tahoe in time to meet up with the sis-in-law and niece for a trip to yellowstone.
Planning on hitting the redwoods, a few local breweries, some beach time, and hopefully no vw repair shops...gonna be a bit nervously weird actually taking the bus out after so much mechanical drama and fixes. I suppose the fixes have been remedied, but i cant help feeling like we are waiting for the next issue to spring up given our luck so far. But, hey, who cares, right? We got AAA and a flexible schedule. Might as well enjoy the journey.

Yes! Sweet delicious cargo coming my way
Beer tasting itinerary already mapped. Will take George and Rusty to a couple of brew pubs.
Then park the boys in the driveway and walk to the rest. Maybe take Max downtown. Will let the shanangins determine that. Gotta be responsible
This is going to be good. Xatie is bummed, she will be in Tennessee. _________________ Keep on Busin'

Now we are talking my language! Thisis gonna be one giant, roving brewfest! The beer bus already has a brewery tasting tour scheduled with our friends in Bend, now we get another in portland!?!?!...oh my aching liver...

Spent the day re-torquing exhaust bolts (one on #4 a little loose), retorquing and plugging CV bolts (all except one bolt stayed at 26# without lock washers), cleaning engine bay, lubing distributor, timing and valves both are within spec, some other odds and ends, checking and rechecking, and repacked the bus with essentials for a campsite on wheels.
Looking forward to the trip and wishing we could take off today...

Correct. But to add...you wan to confirm they are in deed opening and closing. Listen and feel the upper tin with your hands for the flaps opening and closing while working the thermostat flap lever back and forth.
Also use a small mirror to peek into the upper tin area thru the spark plug holes to confirm as well. _________________ 1972 Westy Hardtop/Type-4 2056cc
