I went round to Cecil's in Stockton yesterday and we did seat swap. He now has my 71 bug High back and can slide across into the seats, I now have his wide butt buckets, so I won't slide around in the Mojave road.
Cecil also included some Graphite epoxy door pocket covers, and they sure look neat.
My bikini top is using the back part of a standard frame and so has reinforcements spot welded on. Cecil had the special tool for removing spot welds, so I am trying that.
The 90 mile drive to Stockton used exactly 5 gallons of premium gas, and I was cruising along at 75 most of the way with my 2054 cc, dual 40mm Weber motor. So 18 MPG is fine, but off road I will be lucky to get 10 MPG. For the 200 miles across the desert with no gas stations I will be taking an extra 16 gallons of gas in containers!
This trip is over the Memorial Day Weekend, and I will post the neat stuff here.

nice seats Sam!
hey as far as carrying "extra fuel"....
not sure what you use, as I've been mulling taking extra fuel for the Kubeltreffen trip...
has anyone ever tried these? RotoPax
http://www.amazon.com/Rotopax-rx-1-75g-gasoline-1-...ds=rotopax
unfortunately it don't look "Thing appropriate" but it may lay flat/tuck in a nice spot safely.
Have a fun trip Sam!

Think about getting the spare gas tank that fits inside the spare.
Be careful to get the right size, as they are made for both 14 & 15" wheels.
Pricey, but really great.
Here is a pic of a great Thing from the Seattle show, that has the spare gas can in the spare wheel.

the spare tire gas cans are cool, but more for emergencies, not extended offroad trips. How much does it hold? I'm sure not but a small portion of the needed 16gallons. a few jerry cans should do it. _________________ '67 Westy pearl white "Greta"

When I went round to Cecil's on Sunday to swap seats, he told me he had a tool to remove spot welds. As I was using the back half of a regular soft top frame, there were spot welded side pieces. I took the tool and drilled out the spot welds and now my bikini top frame looks as it should. I guess my next step is 'rattle can' black. I also added the visors that Cecil gave me, so now I have:
Good bucket seats for the harness
Door pocket covers
Working sun visors
Bikini frame that is correct.

So Sam Im really liking the idea of the inner door covers you fab'ed up. It seems a great place to stow things but Im guessing soft things so they dont dent up the door exterior when doing serious off roading? I was wondering if they hinged down or they were completly removable. I havent checked to see if you have a build thread on these or not but Im thinking Id like to copy your idea is hat would be OK? _________________ Change is Opportunity!

The pocket covers are completely removeable, they are made by Cecil, with the yellow Disney Thing. _________________ 63 singlecab
