On another thought, why couldn't you pull power from the coil + wire (#15) like the late models do? Then you really wouldn't have to do any drilling of the tunnel (an possibly hit a fuel line).

Thanks Bob. Yes, I could indeed do that. Just would have to supplement the kit wiring with an inline fuse which is easy enough.

I will take Jim's suggestion and see if the trans is tapped for the VW reverse light switch. That would make life easier.

Noticed a little brake light weirdness the other night, hopefully it had just popped up as I would hate to think I've been running around without proper brake lights all this time!

Was pulling out of the garage and noticed in my mirror I only saw the reflection of one brake light on the garage door. Then I started pumping the brakes and noticed that sometimes the brake light would come on and sometimes it wouldn't. Sometimes it would just come on and then turn off even though I hadn't released the brake pedal.

Troubleshot it yesterday, made sure the bulbs were good, made sure I had good connections at the fuse box, made sure I had good connections at the brake light sockets, then pulled the meter out. Probed the left rear brake light wire, it was weird - when pushing the pedal I'd get 1 volt back there then while holding the pedal it would slowly rise through to about 3 volts but wouldn't go any higher.

So pulled the left front wheel, checked power to the brake light switch. Yep, full power there. Pulled the wires off the switch, taped them together, yep full voltage back at the brake light. Problem = switch.

Fortunately when Keith did the car, he put in a dual-circuit master cylinder so there was another unused switch already in place. I moved the wires over to the other switch and all is well. For now anyway. The car was set up to use DOT 5 brake fluid which I've been told tends to eat the pressure switches for the brake lights so I'm now wondering how much longer this one will last.

I also noticed during the course of testing that I'm getting full battery voltage through the fuse box on the un-switched circuit but then I'm losing about a half a volt through the ignition switch. May have to investigate that further one of these days...

I believe its 27mm but I always use an adjustable wrench

For posterity's sake, let it be known that those nuts are 24mm. Very Happy

Where are you going to go once inside the tunnel? shouldn't the wire just follow the brake line out of the car where it would need to be by the nose cone? I have one of these kits but have yet to install it - but this is how I thought it went.

My impression from the instructions was that you could run the wire into the tunnel with the shift rod to connect it to the switch. That doesn't seem to be the case.

Theoretically you could run it with the brake line but getting it to actually come out where the brake line comes out is a challenge.

Bob's and Jim's suggestion of just powering it via the coil like VW did in later years seems like it might be the best way to go for my sanity.

What's everybody's favorite molybdenum-disulfide paste for general lubrication? My throttle linkage is feeling like it could use some lube on all those little ball & socket joints, but I want to make sure I don't use something that's too thick and will make the linkage sluggish.

Coming from left field; I use Fluid Film. Used sparingly, it works great. If you use too much your car will smell like a goat farm. It also prevents further corrosion.

Hmm I thought about that. Love that stuff, have a can on the shelf. I think later this year I'm going to buy a case of it and undercoat the whole car with it. Very Happy

I have already employed it to fix the squeaky brake pedal.

So was there (or is there) an accessory for the early rear view mirrors to reduce glare at night, like a clip-on piece of tinted plastic or something to clip over the mirror? Like sunglasses for the mirror?

The glare from following cars in the mirror at night is pretty bad. I would love to have one of those period accessory day/night mirrors but not for $500. Very Happy

CIP1 has this one listed for Beetle '58-'67 and Bus '65-'67, wonder if it would work on Type 3.

It might work but it's the wrong shape and size.

There is a Type 3 one in that green plastic like that but I haven't seen one in a while.

Here's a thread about it

So after a nice morning of surfing followed by some fish tacos, I decided to pull the muffler to try and locate the source of the exhaust leak.

I had picked up a set of the lower heat exchanger clamps and gaskets from ataraxia and he helpfully and kindly threw in a few exhaust gaskets as well.

Getting the muffler out wasn't too bad

When I pulled it, I thought for sure I had found my exhaust leak:

However when I re-installed the muffler and fired it back up, the leak was still there!

Upon closer inspection before the exhaust got too hot, I finally located (heard and felt) the leak on the muffler itself where the tube that joins the left side heat exchanger is welded to the muffler body (you can see the soot traces):

So. What are my repair options for that? Maybe some muffler putty and hope for the best?

You might wind up pulling it anyway if you can't find the spot to close up...you could always swap it out with a correct muffler.

I've got lots of ideas as long as my money isn't involved. Laughing
