Nah - your car, your thread, post what you want

That reverse light switch has got to be better than the one behind the speedometer.

That was my thinking when exploring the options. I don't like the one behind the speedometer because the car has to already begin moving backwards before the light will come on. Doesn't help much for pedestrians or following traffic when attempting to parallel park. This one comes on when you shift into reverse just like every other car in the universe.

That's a fancy little doo-hickey. I dig it.

So, went through the first full tank of gas since getting the car down here in Brooklyn. Been pretty much all city driving but I was still surprised to find that I only got 14.7 mpg on that tank! Shocked

For comparison's sake, on the drive home from Albany when I picked it up, I got 24 mpg but of course that was mostly highway.

Those of you with twin Solex 1500s or 1600s, what kind of mileage do you see in city driving? I think this one is set up a bit on the rich side, will have to check Keith's notes.

In my old '66 Type 34 that I was driving a lot, I usually got in the mid/high 20s driving around town and some short highway trips to work. Freeway I would get 30 or more.

24-25 around town seems reasonable.

I have a long way to go to get 24-25 around town. Will have to investigate further. I'll run a couple more tanks through just to make sure this one's not a fluke.

I usually get around 22-24 in town, with a little suburban running mixed in. If I keep the speed down to around 70 on the highway, I'd get around 27. Most times on a highway run though, I'd get 25 or 26, while running along at 75 or so (keeping up with traffic).

I think Keith opened up the jets, to make up for the lack of quality in the New York fuel he was buying. He did so, trying to get the car to run smoother. Might be worth asking him how much he opened them up. Wink

P.S. My Weber 34 ICTs would get similar mileage (within 1 or 2 mpgs) to my Solex carbs.

Yeah Keith told me he had to go up 1 size on the main jets to deal with ethanol -was in CT last summer or at the Invasion he told me that. I have mine jetted "stock" for a 65 instead of the 64 specs. I get in the low to mid 20's (93 octane) but don't bother to check mileage that often honestly. I cruise backroads mostly and don't go into the city much at all. I am on the rich side too, and was thinking about going down from 135 to 132.5 mains to see how she runs

Done that, no issues there. The oil smells like oil and it's not above the mark. It doesn't seem to be leaking from anywhere, must be getting burned.

I do know that Keith had adjusted the jetting as mentioned above, he left copious notes as to his changes so I'll have to pore through that to see what's up. Will report back when I get a chance to do so.

In my '66 squareback w/ 1641 dual port stock solex 32pdsit's I get 23-26mpg city & 27-31mpg on the highway driving 65-70mph. I got around 21-25mpg in my '65 squareback w/ 1600 single port stock solex carbs.

Hello all,
I was out of the country for a while so not much time to spend on the Squareback. I would post a couple photos but last time I did that, RocketA's panties bunched up so tight he crushed a testicle! So to avoid any additional fainting/clutching of pearls, I'll just get right to the tech stuff:

I think I mentioned earlier that I've got a little pinhole exhaust leak at the muffler on the left side where the lower pipe enters the main muffler chamber. I tried a quick fix with some muffler putty but that hasn't really accomplished anything (unless I have more than one leak and haven't discovered the other one yet).

I'm considering removing the muffler again and having it welded up properly but if I do that, then I also want to do something to preserve it properly for regular use.

The muffler is currently in good shape, not rusty but it has only the factory coating on it which I know isn't going to last long in real use.

I just want to get some feedback from the experts here as to what is the best way to go for long-term preservation. The options I'm aware of so far are:

1) Prep & very-high-temp paint
2) Prep & ceramic coat
3) Prep & very-high-temp powdercoat (if such a thing exists)

I'm also thinking that whatever I do to the muffler I should probably do to the heat exchangers at the same time. Any thoughts on the best route here?

While I was gone I also received a nice box in the mail from Daniel Stern Lighting, so more updates to come...

2) ceramic coat

This. Every high temp paint I've ever tried has burned off.

X2.

High temp paint will burn off.

No powder coat will last on a muffler.

Option 4, Vintage Speed stainless steel muffler with the "Abarth style" tip. Cool
