I've got a question. Beautiful car by the way. I see that under your hood, in the luggage area between your gas tank and the back of your dash there isn't any tarboard. On my '57 there IS tarboard in that area. Does it look like there was any there at some point and it was removed? Or maybe it's just '57 and on they used it, for some # of years?
Anyone else have tarboard under their hood? I've been wondering about it. What purpose does it serve I ask myself Wouldn't it dirty up that nice vintage luggage? Maybe it's a precursor to Dynamat I think No, that can't be.
Your inside trunk area looks so clean without it so it got me to wondering about it again.

My 1957 sedan has the glued-in-place brown covering material underneath the blue-gray cardboard trunk liner. I don't think it is tar board, such the material used in the engine compartment for soundproofing. It is some other type of material.
I believe that this brown material under the trunk liner is used for soundproofing purposes. I don't know about the 1956 model year cars, but the 1957 deluxe sedans should definitely have this material in place under the trunk liner.
Rob, it sounds like you're missing the trunk liner in your car.

Hi Bruce.
I've got the liner. But was looking around, working in that area and remarked to myself that it was strange to have that tar mat like material there.

Story time...........
This car is so beautiful.
i have a few more boxes of parts and paperwork to pick up from the old gentleman that owned her. It last was tagged to drive not he roads in Alaska 1982. He just kept it in a garage, cranked it and ran it in driveway and back in garage.
From some of the conversations i have had with him (more info to get when i pick up rest of stuff) - he was living in the lower 48 at the start of his ownership with the car - California - and then moved on to Alaska in late 70's/early 80's and the car had some sort of engine rebuild maybe in the 70's. He can not remember.
I see lots of extra fabulous parts in the boxes, like maybe the original hella glass light covers, 4 of them. Spot beam in a box, original front plastic bulb covers, all the door parts are there i believe, he has more stuff i have to get.
Cool.
If i look the vin of # 1267217 i get August if 1956 - so this is really a 57 ? i think the old man always called it a 56. Even had a custom tag that said "56" on it, lol.
I think the motor is matching - when i look at the engine # 1478620 I am getting June 1956 according to a few charts, can somebody check that of me. If thats correct - this could be original motor ?
thanks of your time... |

From yesterday...I misread the chart concerning the engine date, but Everett added info/clarification concerning it, as well:

Looks like you actually have a very early production year 1957 model, built in August of 1956 (August being the first month of production for the new model year). But your engine number dates to May of 1956, which isn't unheard of.
Each number on this list is the LAST vehicle produced for each month:

A small correction:
Engine # 1478620 is near the end of June, 1956
To clarify what you said above so there is no confusion:
It's not unheard of to have a different engine but there is no way it's the original engine if it's from June.
The original engines are always in line with the VIN #s from the month/year charts on the site. |

maybe gonna see if there are any fellow Alaska folks on here that might want to have a car like this.
I dont know, was just thinking about the car.........Probably hard to find a good quality survivor like this all the way up here in Alaska. These boxes seem to be all the original parts, and those parts are in great shape, duplicates of emblems, and other accessories.
The chrome applied to the front and rear fenders is something I can not find on another bug. One of them may be custom, the other stock ? Sooooo shiny cuteness |

The chrome on the fenders are rock guards, to save the paint on the fenders. This is an amazing find, anywhere but especially for up here in Alaska! Can't wait to see what comes for this little gem! _________________ '57 Ragtop

Just curious, how did you get around the hood latch problem? |

I really cannot get over the condition of this car. It is extremely nice, and the things that are wrong with it are easily corrected. You are very fortunate to have found it.
You are going to need to take on a sort of "museum conservator" role, you know what I mean? Because something happened to you that is bigger than just buying an old car.
I have a coral red 56 basket case. Your car answers many questions for me.
I'll be following this thread. |
