Hello all,
For about the last 7 or 8 months I have been so tied up with life I was about to pull all my greys out. Things are starting to slow down and I'm starting to be able to catch a breath.
Late last year my wife started having complications with her pregnancy, a pregnancy that was not easy to achieve. Lots of specialist Dr visits, tons of medical drugs for both of us and a bank account draining experience and complications were not what we wanted.
On January 11th I rushed home from work at 11 at night to take her to the emergency room. She was admitted right away and talk of emergency c-section started almost immediately. It turned to "Lets have you rest and we'll double check things in the morning". We were told "You will have this baby early, tomorrow or 3 months from now, we don't know but you are hospitalized until she is delivered." My wife and the baby were able to hold out for 10 more days when she gave birth to our baby girl Raelyn Mae. She was 3 months early and weighed just 2 pounds 1/2 ounce. She spent her first 3 weeks in a preemie isolette under billy ruben lights and hooked up to an oxygen mask and we were not able to even touch her for the first 3 days. She eventually was able to move from the mask to normal oxygen tubing with a cannula and we were able to hold her skin to skin for hours at a time.
She spent just over 3 months in the NICU but Saturday April 25th we were able to bring her home, finally. She is in fantastic health and only needs the lowest setting of oxygen for a couple of weeks.

3+ months later we finally get to take her home

Best wishes & continued good fortunes.
We were in a very similar place, almost 10 years ago, with our 2.5 pound "31-weeker"... PM if the journey gets rough. I (E.) feel only those that have travelled that path can truly understand all the fears, difficulties and demands. You are not alone--others have been there and remember it well. The days will be long, but the years will be short.
On the "bank account draining experience"... Hopefully they told you about the Social Security benefit for low-birth-weight preemies? That helped us a lot financially, at that time. |

Congratulations and Best Wishes!
My grandson, Max, was born prematurely so I understand your anxiety. He was 1lb. 10oz. NICU facilities are truly amazing. He is 8 now, plays hockey, lacrosse, and baseball.
Enjoy your special little girl! _________________ 67 zenith blue sunroof

That's great news!
So glad to hear that things are becoming normal.
I'll PM you but I'm guessing that if you were at Children's Hospital, you might have met my daughter who is still there after 3 months.
My grandson was born at 1lb 10oz......
Been a long road but he is at 4lbs 10oz with a bright future.
I will hopefully soon fully understand your joy!

PM'd you back Dave. Really glad to hear your grandson is doing good.
On about our 3rd day in the NICU one of the nurses noticed us talking about how little and low her weight was. She came over and said "You have nothing to worry about, one day soon you'll have a big 5 pound heifer like her over there." When that day came I was a beaming with joy that I had my very own big 5 pound heifer!

Thank you for the offer, I may need it one day. They did tell use about both Medicaid and SS for her due to her low birth weight, it has helped. Thank you for mentioning it.

My wife is a NICU nurse and deals with the "twinkies" all the time. Its amazing what they can do. She has always said that girls "behave" better then the boys.
Best of luck...you will be amazed at how she grows and thrives. |
