Greetings all,
I am in the market for a thing--my first foray
but me and my brother inherited a single cab 67 pickup.
I have some concerns about the Thing I am looking at.
The seller claims it has 47k unrestored miles but looking at the paint in several spots there are chips that show white underneath. It is orange but it shows a white underneath it-
Most of the pictures I have seen on the internet show bare metal under the paint.
I don't know if it is primer or this was a repaint of a white Thing.
Also, the engine seems updated (at least the air filter).
Can anyone tell me if this looks unrestored or an orange paint over of a white thing?
Thanks in advance-Todd

I don't know about un-restored, but with a quick glance at the engine:
1. Electric fuel pump and stock pump block off plate
2. 009 type mechanical advance distributor (non-vacuum)
3. Weber type progressive 2BBL carb
4. 2 plastic fuel filters in the engine bay which are never a good idea
If you're looking for all stock, this isn't it. But it's nothing that can't be changed back to stock. |

Is that some sort of "surgery scars" on the front wall?
Looks to be a pretty complete repaint to orange. Look under the dash and see what color you have. _________________ Walküre Restoration Thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=737492 |

White would be the primer. The whole car has been repainted, main wiring harness at firewall has orange paint then black over that. Orange on floor pan would be overspray then black over that. Under dash looks like rust painted over. Stuff to remember, the car was painted at the factory with body shell and fenders, hood, engine lid, windshield frame and doors . No wiring, latches , floor pan engine bumpers gas tank steering column etc. There should be no over spray anywhere and no tape lines nothing taped up. Looks like a car that was orange and repainted. Also factory paint was semi gloss. Also has had a VWoA roll bar at one time that has been removed and bolts put back in to fill the holes. |

Looked at pictures on Ebay. Check straps paint overspray. Some extra hose or big wire on tunnel. plastic plugs around rear inside body painted. Gas tank giving the rattle can restore. Type 2 engine seal. Oil filler early beetle with vent tube. |

I too looked at ebay. I think your money could be better spent. The engine is a 1641 by the add, not original, progressive carb (recently discussed on this forum with the general consensus to avoid one), seems like a sloppy paint job. The rust painted over in the footwell worries me. |

Just another FYI to second what the others have said, not only is that a junk Pinto carb on that engine, it is being force fed by a generic electric fuel pump which are know for outputting to much pressure for a vw carb. That will make a carb that is already a pain to tune nearly impossible.
Where in upstate are you located? |

Definite items in question nailed by others.
Bigger question now
Is seller knowledgeable and selling you a line or did seller get sold a line prior and does not know better.
Good luck finding the right one and at the right price. They are out there and not too hard to obtain.
Hopefully pointers here will give you more ammunition for purchase and definite knowledge of what to look for in a Thing. |

I too saw this ad on Ebay. What strikes me as odd is that he is big into claiming that it is a " survivor car " but most of what I see on the car is not original ( seats / paint / wheels / dash / engine ). He had a video on YouTube as well.
The guy is either not very knowledgeable on Things or he is covering something up........I would pass on this one. |

My Dad died 2 years ago leaving the single cab to me and my brother-
despite my better judgment, I let him take it--
I think it only had 68k original miles and my dad was the only owner.
It needed some frame, body and engine work and I have 2 small kids, where his are grown so I figured he had more time for it.
I should have kept it--live and learn--
but I will try and get some pictures.
Thanks all--todd |

Oh ok. You're a bit past me, I'm down by Binghamton. I think Mike Basso is in your neck of the woods, he may be a good place to start. |
