Afternoon!

I've recently acquired a Bone stock 1966 One owner Ghia. 85,000 miles.

It hasn't run in 12 years due to the owner parking it in the garage.

Good news, the engine still turns over by hand, and the 6 volt electrical system is 100% stock and in-tact. (stock 1300 SP)

I will be posting photos soon, so just wait for those.

I've been working on type 1 air-cooled's for about 4 years now, however I work mainly on the 70'+ years.

My plan is to change the oil, set the valves, basic tune up (static time at first) plugs/wires/cap/rotor/ rebuild the carb/ new fuel pump/ new rubber fuel lines.

Pop-in a new 6 volt battery and see if I can get it started. And then change the oil again. And check the compression.

Depending on how bad the gas tank is from sitting, I may replace it.

Next, Without question I plan to rebuild the ENTIRE brake system for safety. Everything down to the metal lines will be replaced, however this year has disks all around, and a single circuit master cylinder.

I plan to upgrade to Disks in the front, as I did with my Bug, but I assume I will need to change to a dual circuit master cylinder?
(some advice would be nice)

Also the car has EMPI wide 5 GT-5 (vw lugs) rims. Which will be removed, and powder coated with new 165/80/R15 Yokohama tires.

Lastly, In the near future, I plan to replace the entire wire harness (just so i know everything is 100% new, and switching to a 12 volt system, any recommendations here would be great.

Nice to be apart of this forum, and will post updates here Soon.

Cheers- Thomas

Welcome and congrats, 66 is a good year!
Photos!
For sure drain and replace the fuel.
If fuel pump works...no need to replace.
Photos!
You will be hard pressed to buy aftermarket parts that are anywhere as good as the originals, Keep fuel tank as long as it is not swiss cheese. Pinholes can be simply repaired...
Dont throw anything away...at least until you have satisfactory replacement.
Disc brake conversion is not too difficult on a balljoint 66, nice upgrade. I would go to a dual circuit M/C.
In the 80's...I went 12 volt on a 66, replaced dash bulbs... and kept the 6 volt starter, 12 volt solenoid. Will fire your motor quickly!
Where are the pics? Very Happy

Welcome Mr Duncan.
We wish you every success with your '66 and look forward to seeing it evolve. Just wondering how your plans are for the brakes.

Does the 66' Ghia use the same style front beam and shocks as a 66' Beetle?

If so, I plan to get OEM style Oil shocks from Wolfsburgwest.

Can anyone confirm? I assume the ride quality is great with oil shocks, I put gas ones in my Beetle, and they were WAY to stiff.

Also, I assume the best supplier of rubber seals & products would be West Coast Metric? Just like for the Beetle.

So, I have a question you Ghia Guys can answer,

I noticed... No vent windows..?

How do you stay cool while driving? I know the front nose vents route air into the car, but where is the exit? Any way to point it at your face?

Cheers-

As for rubber seals and the like, I used WCM on my first Ghia but for the '66 I found the ones for KGPR and HOG were better. Generally KGPR will have a wider Ghia selection

I made this post about a year ago. It is about getting some more air in. I am waning the air deflector thing but mod it where it scoops in more air. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5...p;start=20
