So question Guys,

I know when VW went from the standard cooling fan shroud in the BEETLES they went from a non-vented deck lid, to a two slot Decklid for the doghouse cooling system due to the larger fan in 71'

They found it needed more air, and went with a 4 slot deck lid in 72'

In my 66' Ghia, I plan to put a dog house cooling shroud & oil cooler on the stock 1300.

What did VW do when they put a DP 1600 DH cooling system in?

did they add a different deck lid for the Ghia?

Also, Does anyone know if the stock 6 volt generator will bolt up to the large DH fan? Do I need a different backing plate?

I assume the larger fan would draw more power from the little 1300, but should still be powerful enough to cruise at 60 mph?

Ghia deck lids are pretty much alike. 69ish went to the plastic rain tray.
To go to a doghouse set up you'll need a handful of parts. Shroud, offset adapter, doghouse cooler, seals, hoover bit, fan, flap set up if you run them...
Not sure about backing plate Embarassed
A quick search will prob get your answer on that one.

It has been side-swiped in the front fenders in the past, you can see from the repairs around the headlight bucket area. (notice how the chrome ring fits funky)

Other than that, the nose has never been hit before. Wink

Good start!

You do realize that your current engine and the car is already converted 12 volts? You have a '67 12V generator.

When the engine lid was changed to the later style, the air intake vents are fully exposed from below. To prevent rain from wetting out the engine, there was a wide plastic rain tray that went the full width of the decklid inner reinforcement. It was simply screwed onto the decklid from underneath.

What I did on my '64's stock original engine lid to accomodate the added air needed by the 1600 engine with doghouse and dual carbs, was to use a heater hose adapter slipped over the decklid latch's round collar on the body. It spaces the lid about 1.5" up to enable more air to enter along the sides of the lid while driving. The weight of the decklid keeps the adapter in place. When I park I simply take off the adapter. http://vwparts.aircooled.net/Muffler-to-Heater-Hose-Connector-Pipe-113255165-p/113-255-165.htm

Will you be buying stock steel 5-bolt Ghia wheels to get powdercoated, or will you powdercoat the 5-spokes? Realize that the 5-bolt '66 Ghia stock wheels were a 1-year only. They'd be the same as the 4" wide Beetle wheel from '66 and '67, but the Ghia '66 wheel was painted all-black so that the stock trim rings would contrast better.

When you sit in the Ghia you may notice that you sit off-center compared to a Beetle. Steering wheel and pedals are slightly to the right of where you're used to them on Beetles. Reason is, that the SEAT is positioned about an inch farther away from the tunnel, to take advantage of the wider floors. that's normal for Ghia- just need to get used to it.

Cruise at 60? Why so slow? I'm sure you'll find that 70+ is really easy and comfortable in the Ghia.

If you are considering to fit a tachometer, realize that the 12V one from a Porsche 912 fits exactly into the dash opening for your clock.

Are you planning to replace the outer mirrors with ones somewhat more stylistically suitable?

Weird, the PO said its 6 volt, It has a useless dead 12 year old 6 volt battery in it.

Ill have to look at the part # and check the generator.

And ill take off the voltage regular and check that too, maybe he was using a 12 volt generator with a 6 volt regulator? Im not sure. Seems like it would blow up.

Ill be getting the EMPI wheels on it Powder coated.

60MPH due to its a stock 1300, with 80,000 miles on its a little tired right now.

I have yet to drive it to get the condition of the motor yet. Probably wasnt in tune.

OH yeah, I will be putting the stock mirrors on!

Turns out the motor wont move more than 2mm at the pulley.

So, I mixed up my Mixture of 50/50 ATF & Acetone. Really works well.

Filled the crankcase up with 4 quarts of it.

Removed the spark plugs (last time it had new spark plugs was in the 80's

And filled each cylinder up full with the mixture.

You can see it pooled here in the cylinder, I will be leaving the spark plugs out untill the engine frees-up and will turn it over until most of it splashes out.

Upon changing the positive starter cable, I noticed... its listed as 12 volts?

and, the 1 year only 1967 12 volt generator, Is infact... 6 volts. (however the 66' 6 volt generator brushes do not fit this generator)

However, Bumping the starter over with the 6 volt battery.. It does infact work, And the engine turned over about 1-2 inches.

Looks like the PO had some wiring to "hot wire" the starter from within the engine bay.

I will be removing this.

Well, I was using my parrents garage over in Lake Charles, LA. (So I had room to restore the car)

However, they sold the house and are moving to Hawaii, So I had it shipped over to my place in Houston, TX this past weekend.

Nice car. You should call it gold member. I like the gold too. Now do a compression test to make sure a ring didn't break while you were freeing the motor up.

Good luck. Have fun. Can't wait to see it run.
