Went back through and re-read the first page of this thread. It would seem the consensus is that this is NOT the same car. In which case, what ever happened to this red one I took pics of as a kid? |

That is the same car that is in the book that I mentioned. There are too many different details between the two cars for that to be the Bonhams car IMO. _________________ Chris

I agree Chris. I can't imagine someone taking all of the right parts off of this car and replacing those parts with all of the incorrect stuff like on the Bonhams car. Wonder if this red car is even still in the U.S.? I know the low mileage Barndoor Ambulance that was displayed and owned by the same dealership as this red 46 recently found its way to a collection in New England... |

Taken at the Lares volky show PR 2015
Well the red '46 is still in basically the same condition as when it was in the book. If there was any doubt about these two '46's being the same car this is proof that they are not. _________________ Chris

I looked at this car in Fort Worth? Tx years ago (late 80s- early 90s) in a building full of unusual cars owned by a salvage yard. I think I missed seeing it at the Ennis show and tracked it down later. It had so many cars around it, that I could not get very close. I wondered if the Red paint meant it was a Russian VW at one time.

The 1946 number plate (pretty distinctive) and the the banana over-riders wrongly sited inboard on the bumpers would seem to suggest it's the same car. |

The ex-Texas car has openings in the 9, 4 and 6 where the Ohio car does not.
It might be the east coast car except the owners last names are different.
Maybe the owner mentioned in Bonhams bought the car from the Ohio owners?
EDIT- Does anyone have the results of the Oldest VW in America contest showing 2nd , 3rd, 4th etc. places

the red car in all of these pictures is the same car but obviously not the green one that just sold at Bonhams because we have current pictures of the red one. One distinctive feature is that that bumper bars are not original ones. They are some sort of fabricated bumpers, perhaps from a later bumper blade. The older plate was the same plate on the pictures in the book that I mentioned and the pictures in that article appear to be from the same timeframe and perhaps from the same photo shoot at the pictures in the book. The car has just had a new plate installed since that time. _________________ Chris

"This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available."
There were zero bids. |

I've been watching this Ebay sale, and from memory there were at one stage, 36 bids on the car, with around £38K reached, and a couple of days to run. How Ebay can suddenly say there were no bids is a nonsense. Only goes to intensify the mystery surrounding the sale of this car! |

I totally agree Martin, I saw it with a similar number of bids and money.
The text did however say that the seller retained the right to withdraw the car as it was offered for sale elsewhere. _________________ Rod,

When the seller wants to end the auction early, he has to cancel each bid, one by one. After that is done, the auction has no bids and is ended. _________________
