I'm planning a project to make a BlackBox for my car. Not the CB black box, but a data logger. What types of things would you want to log if you could for a long trip or a daily basis?

Head Temp
Oil Pressure
Oil Temp
Case Temp
RPM
MPH
Voltage
AFR
EGT
Brake Temp
TPMS

300% overkill on an old car, but I like having side projects. May be good application for tuners? I don't know. Input welcome

Are you running FI/electronic timing or carb/dizzy?

Can't believe you don't have:
TPS
MAP

other ideas:
ignition advance
charge air temp
crankcase pressure
charge airflow
ambient temp
AFR by bank depending on the induction/fuel system you have.
barometer
humidity
thermostat position
choke position (if applicable)
idle air valve position (if applicable)
gear (calculated by rpm-mph comparison...I do it in excel post-processing)

TPMS? really going overboard with modernizing the bug Wink or did you mean TPS?

if you want, I can come up with a list of PID's next time I plug in a car. but I think fuel temp, tank pressure, cam correlation and fuel pump duty cycle can get crossed off the list.

edit:

here is a 100mph list

When you say "old car" and want to measure "case temperature", does that mean you are refering to your ACVW? If that's the case, there is no OBD-II, no CAN bus, no ECU. So you are talking about taking raw sensor data, things like voltages, and converting that to readable digital parameters before you log them. That's no simple task, but perhaps someone makes such a box. Maybe you could rig up your own if you get sensors, ECU and OBD-II from a newer car and plug in to that. I'm sure it would freak out and constantly throw codes, but you might still be able to read the parameters you are looking for.

I'm talking about reinventing the wheel. And yes, for ACVWs with all raw data.

mmmK. Simple matter of programming, as they say. But it can definitely be done.

Good luck, keep us posted.
