Does anyone else have a source for 500/525-16 16" Excelsior tires?
Coker Tire is apparently out until the middle of August. |

I really wouldn't put Excelsiors on a car as nice and correct as yours..
Probably decent tires but the bold Excelsior lettering just make them look wrong.
Tires are important and can really make or break the look of a vintage car.
I would go for either Firestones or Avons.
Had Firestones on my split until recently and was very happy with how they drove. They do look good even if they are a bit more "American" in appearance than what an old VW would have had originally.
Currently running Avon tires and really couldn't be happier.
Even if they are English and not German, they have a very genuine "European" look to them, much like what you would see on cars like these in the 50's.
Compared to the Firestones they also handle a fair bit better. Less wandering and stiffer sidewalls makes it take corners with less roll.
Just my 2 cents.. |

Excelsiors look much much better and far more original than Firestones... Firestones ooze America.. and just don't look that good on a vintage split... and certainly never a standard. I wouldn't call Excelsiors the greatest tires in the world to drive on... if it weren't for the vintage correct disease I had with my split I would roll some sort of 16" radials and enjoy the ride. Pretty much all bias plys, even the avons drive like shit. You take the rough with the smooth. _________________ DB

I have to disagree, Firestones not being correct because they ooze America...
Apparently they were oozing from Germany, at least in 1957. Here is what I believe to be the original spare from my '57 Oval. Yeah its not a split..
Firestone Phoenix
Anyway, made in Germany:
Fun stuff!

has anybody looked into the diamondback auburn classic? Radials that look like bias ply with pie crusts and everything? I'm thinking about them for a much later car on 15's but have heard good things from people with early non vw's _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

I am looking at a pair of these. Both Coker and Lucas will have them soon.
This is the 1st time they have been produced in the proper size for a Beetle 15 inch rim. Production is supposed to be running now as they recently did a test run of 25 tires or something like that. I think at a plant in TN. ? But USA made anyway.

those do look great, I did not bring them up as I have a later car and need a 3/4 inch whitewall in a 600, something that I can get from diamondback soon, but Coker is not going to do a small white in that line of tires (bummer) _________________ Stop dead photo links! Heidenau P29 5.00x16
Looks very "period correct", mine were made in Germany in 2013!
Load index is "76" (400kg), and max speed "P" = 150km/h (just enough for us ) _________________ Il est grand le mystère de la DR |
