|
|
I have been building my 4 seater rail buggy from the ground up for 3 years and everything that I have bought with the name empi has had issues. Tonight I finally got to take the thing down to the gas station and fill it up. I got home and my 6 year Old daughter said daddy something is leaking out of the buggy. After a little investigation I found a pin hole in the weld on the gas tank. I thought all gas tank were pressurized from the factory and checked for leaks to be legally sold. Here's a picture of the hole.

As a general rule, empi should have to comply to some form of standard, and they probably have a quality control, but not every defect gets picked out on inspection. Too many rolling doen the line to catch them all _________________ 1959 baja beetle ragtop( going back to Full body)

My flaps sells plenty of empi parts. also plenty of empi parts he won't sell because he stands behind what he sells. If empi wouldn't make it right He would. Thats why I buy my stuff from him. That and his 40 + years of selling, installing, and repairing parts and vw's he has a pretty good grasp of the scene. |

Maybe I'm just an old fart, but if I bought that and endangered my family finding out it leaked, it would be shoved sideways up an Empi Rep's arse by lunchtime. _________________

The big problem with 3 year projects is getting a defective part replaced that you bought 2 years ago and the receipt is long gone. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

Also the tank probably came with some fine print saying "off-road use only" _________________ Wash your hands

I called the dealer where I got the tank from yesterday, which has become a pretty good friend, and he said he will take care of it no problem. I told him empi rep should take care of that for you. He said the same thing I did about that he thought they pressure tested all of them from the factory. Then he told me that is probably why they put "off road use only" on the box so they don't have to check them. I said you should still tell them that still can't fly , they have to be monitored for safety and environmental.
So you were right Brian about the off road use only tag, and hitest I am a whole lot of redneck and I was ready to fight when I found that leak!!!! |

Buyer beware, I guess. After modifying many expensive (and shiny) new parts I've become a much more cynical and careful buyer. But quality control issues aren't limited to EMPI, SCAT, or bugpoop. The 044 heads I got from CB even had casting material between the fins that needed to be drilled out for proper air flow. |

Damn that sucks. I've bought a few small empi items with no issues.
Deck lid stand offs
Shift coupler and shifter bushing
Bamboo parcel tray
Intake boots
Control arm/sway bar bushings
Also bought an empi header and stinger that had zero fitmet issues and went on smoothly.
Haven't had a problem with any of it. |

RETURN bad stuff to the store; it costs a frickin' fortune for the company to have to refund the store, takes a big hit, and likely loses a retail customer, plus whoever else he tells. That ends up net as better quality.
Like Autozone and O'Reilly would go broke if all that lifetime warranty stuff went bad within months.... _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Not if they made the customer adhere to the warranty. The warranty at most FLAPS is Lifetime...of the part. If you but the lifetime brake pads (distributor cap, thermostat, etc.), and they last you 2 - 3 years, that was the lifetime of the part and you get to buy another. Most customers know this and don't expect to come in and get another set but, for the ones that do, we would give them a set to shut them up. That was their replacement and the end of it. The dealer would rather mark off a few sets so you don't run around goin' "their warranty sucks", when in reality the warranty is only supposed to mean that the part won't break within a very short time.
Now carry on with your discussion ;P _________________
