I think I just "arrived"
But really, I'd start making a 20' mahogany longboard for that- absolutely gorgeous! _________________

I think it will sink But!!! you could just install a tire on the shaft&have one trick unicycle Ive done a lot of marine work and that is a first for me. I knew porsche made some helicoptor engines/drives from 356 engines. I wonder if vw made that or if it was just made for a vw engine. like many things these days made for the chevy engine. there is even a 600+hp Cadillac out board engine.with the trans/greasection/foot made by ZF. |

Very interesting topic as I love the oddball stuff like this. The ad you posted, Everette, shows a different configuration, thought the same idea. The OP's photo does not show a gimbal drive, allowing the unit to pivot. I'm wondering if this was a 'through-the-floor' inboard unit that used a traditional rudder behind the prop. |

looks to me that it wraps around the bottom of the engine and cooling air gets blown out over the exhaust and out of the boat with the exhaust system _________________

No fan forced air through those exchangers. I was going to say water jackets as on a traditional I/O engine (water sucked into the exchanger along with the exhaust gases and then expelled out the rear. Cools the exhaust and muffles the sound) but I don't see a pickup on them either. But.. looks like the Front cap unbolts so it may be a form of waterjacket. Would be rough on the exhaust pipes, though! |

Thats it. I'm plugging up the drain holes in the floor of my buggy and attaching one of these to my rear cage.
I think we've all forgotten how much crazy stuff was built before copyright lawyers figured out how much fun it was to go after all these innovative machine shops.
Liability insurance for a product like this was optional too. Different world now. |

I know it's a VW engine so I'm supposed to love it, but it looks like a horrible product.
Once it's mounted in the hull, that thing is going to be a nightmare to service, you're going to be laying on your stomach soaking wet with the boat ribs pressing into your sides trying to adjust the valves (no way you're pulling the motor for routine maintenance) or change the plugs--no thanks, give me a nice in-line 4 cylinder instead.
Besides, what's the advantage of an air cooled engine when you have unlimited quantities of water to use for cooling just on the other side of the hull? They say it's because there's no "cooling water corrosion" but how long will the VW engine last sitting in bilge water (and sorry, all boats leak)? Every time you run it the fan is going to take whatever moisture is in the bilges and blow it into every nook and cranny of the engine. That thing will corrode so fast it'll scare you.
And it's only 34h. Even in the 50's you could buy a Mercury or Evinrude outboard or a nice Grey Marine 4 cyl engine that could do a better job for the same money and would be more compact and easier to service.
I admire the fact that they sat down and designed this thing, but I wouldn't want it in any boat of mine. |

I agree with every mechanical observation and criticism that coad enumerates. If we applied that equally to our automobiles, this would be a Toyota forum!
I think its cool "Volksicana". And maybe a good "off the grid" industrial bread mixer.....or attach a pulley to it and run a rope tow on your sloped and snow covered backyard.....the possibilities are endless.....but I'm kidding about trying to find one so I can sink my car in the nearest lake.
Still pretty cool to see all the applications that an ACVW engine can be tasked with. |
