What years were these straps used to cover the openings on the generators?

And, what was used to actually cover the hole? Some sort of filter paper that let air thru but kept out dust or just a piece of thin cardboard.

Thx

Not sure what the exact answer to your question is, but I've only seen them on say '71-'73 dual port engines.

Nothing fills the hole in the bottom, they are made more to keep things from falling into the GEN by gravity rather than filter out any airborne dust.

Had one of those on my '72 Super, hated it. I ended up replacing it with one of the black plastic covers that snaps into place.

Keep in mind a filter element of any sort on there would be useless as the normal airflow comes in through the fan, passes through the generator backing plate, then through the generator and on out that hole -- you'd be filtering the airflow exhaust instead of the inlet.

I have one of those on my 71 euro super. The strap closes the bottom hole. I was wondering if the top hole was meant to be closed or left open. My recollection back from the earliest time I recollect looking at the generator (we got the car in '74) was that there was piece of cardboard under the strap covering the top hole as well. But, I'm not sure if that was factory or done by a local mechanic.
