4 bolt rims are the same between type 1 and type 3, correct? I am picking up another square, but the rims and tires Adee not part of the deal. I'm just making sure of my options.
This square is a 66, but it has been converted to late 4 bolt pattern. _________________ My Old 64 Field Find

My understanding is that the offset is different between Type 3 and Type 1 wheels. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

66 was the 1st year for 4 lug rims on a type 3. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Hi. The Bentley manual for 68 and later lists the wheel as a 4 1/2" with an offset of 46mm. Not sure if the earlier type 3 used the same wheel or the 4" wheel.
The type 1wheel, which may be more prevalent, showed different offsets for the 4" and 4 1/2" wheels. These offsets varied from 34mm to 46mm.
The Bentley for type 1's listed a 4" wheel with a 40mm offset. The 34mm offset wheel was for the latest cars, I believe.
I hope this helps, Bill. |

Look at the two posts by Russ Wolfe: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=271076
His first post says that genuine VW wheels have a stamp indicating the offset. His second post shows a page from the VW dealer parts book (that is likely found in more than one location on TheSamba) with a table showing the offset of Type 1-4 wheels. Take note of the "*" indicating 40 mm offset for Type 1 up to March 1972. |
