Looking to buy a Rabbit pickup and doing some research while I look for one. Can I use the hatchback parts in the pickup? I'm thinking that would make it easier to find replacement parts if needed.

While I'm at it, if you have any tips on what to completely avoid in terms of needed work when buying, or any other tips when buying, please let me know!

Thank you!

Not sure what parts you are talking about. Drivetrain or body panels and such?

Motor/trans and front brakes, essentially from the base of windshield forward should be the same. The doors might be the same as the front doors from a 4 door car (you will need to measure) and the rear drums are 200mm instead of the 180mm from Rabbits. Clutches were 200mm while normal Rabbits were 190mm and I'd swap that for a 210mm from a later GTI or a mkII. All mkI's had small spline input shafts on tranny and most had 90mm inner CV's, but again you can swap to a later mkI/II tranny with the 100mm flanges as long as it has the studs for the mkI rear tranny mount.
