My first guess would be a spring or something in the brakes (drum I assume?). |

Yes....drum.
What would be the easy things to check before pulling the drum? |

I had a similar creaking while on the ECVW tour last year. The main axle nut had worked loose (YES>>>There was a cotter key in place) on my rear drum/axle. Check the axle nut and verify that it is torqued correctly
In my instance, I used Type 3 drums on long axle/short stub Swing axles and I had to have the snout and inner surface machined for the drum to fit.
I can only assume that although the axle nut was tightened to torque, it must have not been entirely seated. The trip loosened up the drum etc.
I tightened it up and no more creak (AND I did install the cotter pin again) |

I just got the car back from inspection, so it's good for another year.meanwhile this and was popped up while I was pulling the driveway from the garage. I'm getting ready to go on a camping trip with 406 graders and I didn't want this hanging over my head as I'm coming home on Friday… Ready to buggy.
Seems as if Chris is on the something. I put my torque dude on it and gave it some pressure and it seems to have stopped this creak for the most part. Thanks Chris. i'll keep you posted as to whether or not that was the full problem |

That may or may not of been it after a test drive. How much can you tighten a castle nut?
Is it safe to say the I can tighten it to the next cotter point if it's still creaking and tight? |

Spray some pb blaster on the axle nut and go for a text ride. If that changes the tone its a loose nut if the tone is the same its in the drum. |

I believe the torque is around 250ft lbs, so very tight. |

Sounds like brake drum castle nut loose creak.... I would pull drum and inspect for already damage... If you spin the splines it will ruin your day and maybe more.... Loose nut on axle had ruined almost as many days as loose nut behind steering wheel...
As for torquing... Book says 217ft-lbs for swing axle or 253 for IRS stub axle...... That is 54.25 (63.25) pounds pressure exerted on end of 4 foot cheater on your 3/4 inch driver breaker bar.... You can go somewhat more without hurting yourself... You actually go past the 217ft-lbs (253) value till you get a lineup of nut and hole in axle for cotterpin, not looser...

I generally put a little grease on splines to prevent rust... But basically nut goes on sort of dry (meaning I do not take pains to either grease it or solvent clean it)...
