I'm not sure why I looked at the bus forum for a change but I think after seeing yours I'll stop and talk to the guy down the street with the nice looking bus that hasn't moved for a few years and see if I can buy it. Great find. |

With the motor work commencing I snapped a quick pic of the page code.
Mine doesn't really look like the sage greens I've seen here.
It's brighter. I thought it was my camera at first, but then I read the paint code.
Production date: 11/76.
Same shade of green under the a different name?

Go for it!
I've been shocked to hear "Why, yes I am actually getting ready to sell it...."

Long time... no update.
Finally dropped the motor, degreased it and removed an inch of grime.
Pulled the gas tank out and restored it (electrolysis derusted, seal, primed and painted)
Heater parts are in the electrolysis tank and will soon be cleaned, primed and painted.
Motor seems to have good compression, so I am moving on to fuel lines, injector seals, etc.
Looking for a decently priced Fuel Line kit - any recommendations?
The VWFLAPS seem a bit on the high side and the FLAPS don't have anything close.
Advice welcomed! _________________ '70 Porsche 911T Targa (sold)

I've got good and bad news (I also own a 77 Deluxe).
Finding fuel hose that is Ethanol compatible for every portion of your fuel system is basically impossible; there are some hoses on there which cannot be had for any price in an Ethanol compatible design.
For your standard fuel loop, tank to filter, pump to fuel ring, regulator back to tank, use Gates Barricade MPI Fuel Injection hose Part# GAT 27341.
The piece of the fuel loop that isn't covered is the weirdbag 11mm plastic box fuel filter to the Bosch fuel pump. There is no ethanol rated piece to correctly replace that.

Not really the best kind of news I was hoping for... but thanks.
How many feet of the gates barricade hose? Assuming this is to replace the 7mm lines?
I'm a Bus rookie, so I appreciate the info!
Hoping to at least get this thing back on the road in time for my 4 y/o's 16th birthday! She's already claimed it!
How have others worked around this issue?? _________________ '70 Porsche 911T Targa (sold)

That is a super clean bus~ excellent find! Take Aeormech and TCash's advice on tips and threads to help you get the ball rolling, and you'll be on your way down the right path.
While your engine is out, check for valve creep. Keep in mind you can have good compression and a strong running engine, even if one or more valves is about to fail either by stem or seat. Here is what I found on running a 2.0 air-cooled engine from a 1981 Vanagon. Basically, this is the same engine you have, except with updated engine management controls.

Great, original and stock bus! Super jealous. I hope you don't mess w/it too much as it's worth more like it is.
You're in land of a ton of bus owners there in Seattle. You should hook up with those guys and get them to your place for guidance and education. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Thanks guys!
Blessed to have her parked in my driveway...
...now if I could only get it back on the road!
Planning to keep it stock - adding a roof rack and some curtains.
Some narrow white walls like the OG spare and possibly some new paint on the wheels.
Was looking at the German Supply Fuel line kit online.
May also try to piece it together from various places.
With all the buses on the road, there has to be a solution.
on a side note, electrolysis complete on the heater parts.
Blown away at this process especially since I've been able to save many parts.
While I've been waiting on some parts, I started in on the paint.
Really wanting to preserve the patina, complete with chips and "character".
Clay-barred then busted out the dual action orbital buffer with some light rubbing compound, followed by a nice coat of Zymol wax - love the outcome. Will post up pics of the paint soon.
Hoping to put the engine back in before the end of the month.... _________________ '70 Porsche 911T Targa (sold)

The piece of 11mm hose my supplier sold me is embossed VW and had a current manufacture date code. IF it is used on current production vehicles it will meet today's standard for compatibility. |

Update:
Finally got the motor off the hand truck and onto a modified ATV lift.
Scored an old doctor's swivel stool on wheels that lowers way down to the perfect height to save my aching back.
Replaced fuel lines with the Gates Barricade hose with Oetiker clamps where necessary.
Cleaned all injectors (new seals too) and determined one was bad - new one on order.
I am hoping this is the reason the PO parked it in the first place.
Cold start valve - brittle old hose connectors snapped off when the old fuel line was removed. (new cold start valve ordered)
Fuel pressure regulator was plugged up - so new one ordered too.
Parts should arrive tomorrow - so I'll be changing the oil and gaskets between now and then.
Sprayed WD40 into each of the pistons and replaced the sparkplugs.
Adjusting the points and valves today too... _________________ '70 Porsche 911T Targa (sold)

Thx for the torque specs!
Anyone have tips on disabling the smog equipment?
Some of it is damaged from rust and I really can't justify replacing the more expensive bits when they're not needed (to my knowledge) for Washington State registration.

updates...
Finally tracked down an S-boot here from the classifieds (PO cracked the old one removing it)
Did some research and came across an interesting method to soften the hard rubber boot without damaging it.
Some of you may already be aware of this, but it's new to me.
Oil of Wintergreen and Rubbing alcohol.
The alcohol opens the pores of the rubber, replenishing with the Wintergreen oil and flashes off as it dries.
Oil of Wintergreen contains a natural plastisizer called meythyl salicylate.
After 12 hours in the wintergreen solution, it is noticeably softer!
*Use this method at your own risk
Thought I'd share!
In the meantime... exhaust ideas please!
What's the best header/muffler set-up for this motor while being the most cost effective??
Oil of Wintergreen cocktail test:
after 12 hours of soaking...
Current motor status:
Since I live in WA state - I removed the rusted EGR pipes and fabbed a metal plate to plug the hole. *just under the decel valve.
Motor installation soon!!

On that oil strainer bolt, if you over torque that bolt, you damage your camshaft. 9 foot pounds is easy to overdo without a torque wrench, it isn't very tight.
I seem to recall a couple if cold start valve breakages? Should be advising people to Dremel off the hoses to save these parts?
Do you have the Bentley manual, too? _________________ .ssS! |

Haven't picked up a Bentley manual yet. Just ordered one.
I was not aware of the oil strainer bolt potential for damage - Thanks!
I have a proper torque wrench - I'll be sure to be precise with the torque spec.
A dremel would've saved me from snapping the brittle cold start valve connectors. Bad design if you ask me. I would've liked to see brass connectors.
I used FI clamps this time in place of the crimp clamps for easier removal if needed. Good news is that I picked a new OEM cold start valve for a good price. That helped ease the sting a bit.
Still at a loss on the headers/muffler.
The OEM muffler was swiss cheese and fused with rust when I got it and had to use a cutting wheel to remove it.
Thoughts on the EMPI quiet exhaust?
What else should I check while the motor is out?
Not in a rush to get it installed as I want to do it right.
