After long period of time, my split beetle is back on the road. I bought it in Stockholm at the end of 2011. My plans were quite clear. Use maximum of original parts from this split, wash it to the original paint and paint just the welded areas. I know, many people says that this car looks like a ugly duckling, but I love it. I love the smell of used interior, I love non-original modifications during early days and original & used condition. But at mechanical side, everything must be in order. During the time I have contacted previous owner and he sent me huge documentation, papers, service bills and yearly expenses.
Some basic facts:
Model: VW 11C
Date of production: 18 Aug. 1950 exported to Sweden
In daily usage till 1971 by three owners.
Documented mileage: 280.185km
More information on my blog site. Yes, in Czech, but you may use Google translate. See http://www.samsgarage.org/projects/1950-brezel-aus-schweden

It's beautiful, not over restored, just rebuilt enough to make it survive another 50 years.
This is a my favorite picture:

Now, I think that you should take all of the bad metal you cut off of the car and have it melted down and make something new from it, something like some new beer bottle openers or a statue of your Beetle or something!

Thank you Rob.
I like crashbox & engines like this on the pics on the swap meet. Under the shell of oils and dust there is nice core. More nice than dry trans/engine without any oil leaks during the times. Something bad is good for something other. |

Yes, its like a fossil underneath all that oil, perfectly preserved. Removing the oil must have been like unearthing an ancient artifact or ancient Egyptian Tomb!

Really, really nice work!
I love the thought of preserving as much of the originality and history as possible and you really nailed it with this one. Nice job on the welding and paint blending too! |

Or as Picasso said (of his own studio)
"Dust is the perfect preservative".
Nice work on your bug!

Good eyes, mate. Nobody's perfect and time to time some things must be done twice. I found this mistake in time I have installed clutch cable. |

Thank you guys. My plan is to visit Bad Camberg. Car is quite raw, but I hope that this long way goes well on a old diagonal tires and with fresh engine.
Driving this car is completely different than oval window. |
