Propex makes a model that is to be mounted underneath the vehicle (HS2211):
http://www.propexheatsource.co.uk/heaters/hs2211-external-gas-air-heater

Here's a link to someone that installed one under their Vanagon.

It looks like this would be a decent way to get heat in your bus.
I have a deluxe, so I've got the heater log underneath my rear bench seat.
It seems like you could run the output of this heater up to the heater tube that the heater boxes are usually connected to.
The only thing our buses don't have (at least my deluxe) is a propane tank mounted, which I'm sure a low profile one could be found and mounted to the bottom of the bus.

Does anyone have one of these units installed in their bus?
I'm intrigued. Very Happy

I haven't installed a propane heater or tank, but here's the bay window tank setup that might work...

I need to find out how much it would cost to get one custom made, that would be lower profile.
Incognito, ya know?
This place has lots of variations:

lots of adapters out there that allow you the flexibility to run throw away propane containers so you don't need a permanently mounted tank

http://www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/lp-gas/sturgi-stay-propane-kits.htm

people have used these successfully on westy stoves for years

I installed one of these on my 67. The middle section of heater tubing was trashed so I took advantage and hooked it up to the front half, I now have heat and defrost, works like a charm. I bought a standard replacement tank from Go Westy and mounted it just behind the driver. My bus is stock height, the tank ended up being higher than the suspension by an inch. I used a cardboard box reshaped to mimic the heater so I could find the best spot to mount the heater. Karl at Westy Ventures was very helpful over the phone. It sure isn't for the purist but if you want to be warm and have a strong defrost, it works quite well.

But did you need to cut another whole into the interior of the bus?
I think Karl said that two holes would be required for install, or did you hook them both up to the same heater tubing?

I have a propex in my Syncro Westy and it's awesome. It transforms what otherwise would have been a wet, cold, miserable camping day.

You can take a page from Canadian campers and install the propane tank inside the bus along with necessary propane sensors, or as others mentioned use a smaller portable tank. I love the idea of plugging it into the existing heater tube to provide heat while you are driving.

In addition, you would want to install a secondary battery to provide independent power to the unit with a separate charging circuit like a Westfalia's.

If you can make the modifications clean and unobtrusive, the payback would be tremendous. There's always the option of a refurbished Eberspacher heater if you desire a period-correct modification.

My main question about the HS2211 is the ducting and whether or not it would sufficiently heat up the interior with the stock ducting.
I would think it would be a ton better than stock bus heat.
I'm sure insulating the heater tubes would help a lot too.
What's cool is that I don't think you'd have to cut many holes.

Heat output of HS2211 is same as the one I have at 6500 BTU, so it's plenty. There's also lots of hot air flow from a single vent.

By hooking up to existing duck work for heat supply, you only need one hole for the return air duck. I had a preexisting hole (PO) that I used for my return air. Mounting heater inside does require two holes to be drilled plus it eats up valuable storage space. My priorities were, defrost, warmth while driving, warmth while sleeping. If you can get past the extra hole and having a propane tank mounted on your bus (horrors!!), you'll love the heat...........Russell

I can see how routing all heating air to front and having heater air intake in the back of the bus would circulate the heat very well.

Ok, I just added this to my list of future projects. Smile

Okay, so you did have to run a return air duct.
I was wondering what the two large openings were in the end.
One of them must be the return air duct.
Thanks!

$775 from WestyVentures.
You'd still need some sort of propane source and plumbing too though, so factor that in.
I live in Central Texas, so it doesn't get super cold here but it would be nice to have on certain days.

I'm not an expert on tank desins.
There's not much you can do to change the profile of the horizontal tank because the size has been reduced to such a small size already.Tanks designed to hold gases that changes from a liquid to gas i am told will loose efficiency during the convertion and need to be fill more often.

I finally measured the bottom of the bus, and even a bay window tank would hang way too low. Bummer.

Try this and put it inside vented outside. http://www.westmarine.com/buy/trident-marine--fiberglass-lpg-tank-locker--10393486

i had my gas tank under my bus, and it had PLENTY of clearance. I did buy mine in germany, though.

Still, there has to be something that won't cause issues. I was able to fit both tank and heater on the driver side under the bus. I think it was 200mm diameter, just about 8inches

Damn stupid lowered bus. Laughing
I'm not planning on doing any off-roading or anything but I'd feel a heck of a lot better putting a propane tank under the bus if it was stock height.
Thinking about raising it back up at some point.
