I picked up a 67 double, and am looking to start straightening a few of the problem areas out before cutting and welding. Any tips for returning this area to its original state?

Are those wrinkles in the firewall I see?

You may be able to push that down with a longish 2x6 across under the bed support rails and a scissor jack between the 2x6 and the damage, the trick is to spread the load out on the part you don't want to bend and concentrate it on the part you do.

Yep. Just trying to figure out how to get the original shape back. Looks like someone backed over something on the right side, pushing that whole area up.

Hmmm..... you may have to employ the services of a body shop with a frame straightening machine, that's gotten into some heavy structure to bend that and it's likely you won't get it all out with jacks alone.

That looks more to me like someone drove under the rear corner- classic rear-ending. Simply backing up didn't produce that amount of force.

Here's a better shot of the area on the right side.

I agree. The frame needs to be checked.

Would a standard shop with a frame machine be able to do it? I don't know of any VW-specific shops or places in this area (Annapolis, MD) that have this sort of thing.

I would not call a shop with a frame machine "standard" and does not need to be VW specific. This looks like a good double cab. Worth the investment. Have the frame checked/corrected. They will do the majority of the unfolding of the panels. The frame may have been affected all the way to the front. Handling and safety are the concern. Once they are done you will be free to straighten out all the other bodywork yourself knowing that you are starting from a good foundation.

Try to keep as much of that OG apron area behind engine intact, '66 & '67 Single & Double cabs are different from earlier trucks in that area, the channel that holds that engine compartment seal is not the same as any earlier Buses/Trucks.

I had to splice in a few strips of the funky green channels to get it to go, plus recreate that whole lip area.

Updating for my own documentation...

Called around to a lot of body shops in the area. All have been too busy with insurance work or pre-paid projects to even put it on a frame machine. I even offered a few of the places money for the shop time and get in a waiting list, still no takers. I was chatting about my issues with high school friend who mentioned one of our classmates sons now does body work for one of the shops I had previously contacted. He measured and verified - frame isn't bent. Yay! Now to start evaluating where to start and what to replace first.
