Replacing upper balljoints that have been replaced before. There no dimples in torsion arm, but chisel marks. ( I used a grinder to accent the marks) but is that the correct orientation of b/js into arms?

On some of the newer ball joints, it doesn't matter. The ones I just put on mine, they didn't have any of the indents for orientation, but the stud on the ball joint could move equally free in any direction, unlike the stock ones where they can really only move back and forth because of the way they are slotted. I got my new ones from O'reilly's, they were their Direct Import brand, but when I got them out of the box they were actually Febi/Bilstein. |

They're installed in the car, or I'd take a picture. It was aligned with no problems and drives fine though. I even did a search of the part numbers, and they checked out. |

I recently got some from Wolfsburg West. They too, were Febi/Bilstein joints and the uppers are non directional(they turn in all directions). The lowers, also Febi/Bilstein, had the directional notches on them. _________________ shakers73

I suspect that the non-directional ball joints would either have less range of motion, or be weaker due to less material. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Actually, they have more range of motion. Where the directional move only north and south, the non-directional travel in all directions, much like modern vehicle ball joints. _________________ shakers73

Umm, the design of the suspension means that, unless something has gone very wrong, the ball joints will NEVER move any direction than the “north/south” orientation that the original ball joint design.
Not that this is acceptable at all…

But this ball joint would have failed catastrophically long before it got to this point had it been one of the newer non-directional ball joints. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.
