I owned a 11/4/52 Zwitter for 20 years and all of my research and sightings, indicate no Zwitters had the 100 mm cap....in Car of the Century is stated at ch 1-0397023 some went to 60 mm caps, while some continued using the 100 mm... there's a slight conflict that is completely possible...just goes to show, there are exceptions to all perceived rules.

The so-called Zwitter only 60mm tank first appeared in the summer of 52, a couple of months before the first zwitter.
Then, this same tank continued in production for the first early ovals in 53.
This means there never was a zwitter with a factory installed 100mm tank.

x2.
That's why original zwitter tanks are rare.

I have always seen the no logo version. My Zwitter came with a logoed cap. Was this an accessory, or is there another VW model that came with a 60mm cap?

Barndoors from mid-'51 to early '52 had a 60mm gas cap, but I don't know if it had a logo.

... yes, a split bus used the same size cap, with a logo. My '52 Zwitter also had a logo cap...never heard of a plain one for a deluxe.

My Oct. 52 zwitter which, other than needing a full restoration, was unadulterated when I bought it. Gas cap had no logo.

My August 1952 (split dash) chassis 383xxx has the "zwitter" tank with the small gas cap. It came with a VW logo cap when I bought the car, but I have been told by many that it is a bus cap and the plain cap is correct for the car. I am sure this is right, I'm just too lazy to bother tracking down the right gas cap at this point. Very Happy

Reading the previous posts, I see once again how "Car of the Century" is incorrect. I personally feel that book is worth nothing, except possibly to place under the leg of an unbalanced table. It contains such obviously incorrect information (such as Polar Silver ovals have a green headliner, or that split window sedans came in 3 different green colors) that it should be completely ignored, and any information that is actually correct can be attributed to coincidence.

Sorry, I'll get off my soap box. It's just a huge pet peeve of mine.

Will

if something works after 60 years or so of service, it can stay on the car, logo-ed or not. Personally I like the logo on the cap, but that's just me.

My polar silver appears to have a very light green colored headliner in areas i have checked that are hidden, tucked in. But i won't and can't attest to this until i pull the headliner which might be never. So, polar silvers did not have green headliners.

This was in my car when I got it, I'm guessing it's not the correct one, or is it?

... that's funny Brian. I love to buy parts for a good price., just to have them. I guess some call that hording... a couple of the parts you got from me were in my care for a looong time. Like the script Bosch fluted lens. Sure was happy that was a perfect match for you. Glad I had the insight to purchase it and then "hoard" it, until you needed it Smile
