So I should be coming down on orders and I might be going to germeny. I don't need help finding transportation and I found some info on some import fees and that cars need inspection. So I'm wondering what does the inspection entail for a 58 bug. Do they allow modification? Engine, suspension, brakes? My car is also an original European delivered car so it has semaphores, are those still allowed. Thanks

Hello, where will you be going? I'm here at GK. If you put it in the ARMY system all you will need is a safety inspection. Tires, brakes, lights, no rust in structure, safety vest/s, road triangle and 1st aid kit in car. Hope this helps.

Well the army would be shipping my other car and I'd be doing the bug myself. Would that be the same? Being that I'm in the army is there and agreement or do I still have to pay all the import fees?

Hi,
how nice that your Beetle might return to Europe! There are some extra regulations for American Army member cars in Germany (red instead of amber blinkers and different headlights admissible, I think you can get the details Rom your administration). But semaphores definitely are not allowed and furthermore would be way too dangereous in dense traffic.

I don't have orders yet but trying to plan ahead. That is weird that they aren't legal considering they are original equipment. What are the requirements, being a 58 the brakes/turn signals are tiny anyways, lol. Also what engine mods are allowed, needless to say I do NOT have a stock motor. It's much larger and turbo'd. Also brakes have been upgraded to disks all around and it's lowered. Are these issues? Should I just start trying to find a place to store it or sell it in advance?

Sorry I canīt answer the engine and brakes question. Most things legal in he US will be tolerated as long as it is an US Army member car that does not have to meet strict German requirements. But for the details you should ask the European Army administration. But semaphores were banned already in the 60ies.

Semaphores are not forbidden in Germany! You might have to do some modifications to get them street legal.
If they are turned on, the bulp have to flash intermediatly (sorry donīt know how it is translated correctly). The rear-lights have to do the same.
You can get more informations at http://www.rettung-fuer-den-winker.de/
