Hey Guys i figured it was about that time to start my build of the rail buggy and turn it into a subaru vw railbuggy aka the bugaru! any opinions or ideas you have along the build im more than happy to hear the ideas, compliments, or complaints Laughing so here we are: today i sold my old 1641cc single port motor for 900, i thought it was a good start! Very Happy so now i'm waiting on to find the donor car. Started stripping down the old bug to give it a fresh coat of paint to give it some nice touch's.

Looks like a nice frame to build around. Good luck in finding a car to get your motor.

You can get a JDM motor for probable less than a downer car (the cheapest in my area been about $3000)...

https://www.google.com/search?q=JDM+motors&oq=...p;ie=UTF-8

Generally JDM motors are complete with injectors and all sensors, all you need is a ECU and that can be as simple as Microsquirt and hand made harness or something like Outfront Motor sports can provide....

http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/index.php

http://www.outfrontmotorsports.com/

Kennedy Engineered Products has adapter kits...

http://www.kennedyenginc.com/Pages/default.aspx

Any way just some thoughts...

there should be a code along the bottom edge of the trans that starts with two letters. Those letters will be able to tell you what it might of come from..

I'm curious to see how this goes for you budget wise. Not to be debbie downer, but when I was searching for an affordable source for a motor, although being one of the best options it was definitely one of the most expensive when all was said and done. Mainly because Subaru owners think their cars are worth way too much despite being ugly POS's and rusted out. I wish you well though. There is a lot of cool things that can be done with subys. The thing that really appealed to me were the trim and pulley kits you could get for them. Made the engine look like something out of early 90's anime'. But I could never afford it. Chute my sad Quad4 has nearly bankrupted me. And I'm not even done yet! lol

thanks oragne ill give it a look when i get home! Cool I totally agree with you!! its mainly imprezas! i swear its only in ohio i looked in WV and i found a solid six hits of what i was looking for but im going to get the whole car and im waiting for the right one anything reasonable from 0 to 1000 bucks at the most. Mainly looking for one with a blown trans or something because alot of people would just want it gone so i guess one mans trash is another mans treasure Rolling Eyes
Theres a land mine of parts for subaru and i love it! Well hey maybe one day i wont have to make a budget and go bankrupt from builds Laughing but hey at least the moneys going to something thats worth it!

When I scrapped the leftovers of the Sunfire donor I more than halfed the price I paid for it which was $400. I don't have a nice light motor but I saved a crap load of moola.

Right on orange! I have a Honda transmission to scrap along with the car too so hopefully I'll get some extra cash from that

So today I was browsing around on CL and found a legacy with 161k everything's good trans is a bit shaky so I decided to go with a buddy to go look at it drove it and brought it home for 900! So now I sold my vw motor and in return got a free car Laughing drove it a hour on the highway from Cleveland back home and drove like a dream didn't over heat or anything! So I'll probably drive it around a little bit for the heck of it, and power wash the engine too Smile

anyone with input would be great i've been looking around to see on the forums if anyone has ran into a different ecu for the legacy i don't know if its a later obd1 model or not but my ecu doesn't have the yellow plugs and is a different ecu then others show on the builds don't know if its because its automatic or not. Heres a picture the plugs are grey btw.

it looks to me like you have a 95 and I think it is the first year OBD2. I recommend you try to find a genuine Subaru wiring manual and trace the wire from it. That was hoe I did my Toyota in my buggy. Also you will probably have a OBD2 reader port near the steering column in the car, you will want to wire it in to be able to read the codes with a code reader.

thanks for the reply ed. do you think the haynes manuals would have alot of wiring? I wish i was still in automotive classes because i had an all access pass to all data whenever i was at school and i never realized how much i should have utilized it until now! Its kinda funny i asked the guy to check the engine light when i got it and they didn't have an obd1 reader, which i thought was weird for a dealer to say but now i realized when i started taking apart the car it was obd2 Shocked totally thought it was 96 or 97 and up but i guess the Subaru must have been one of the latest models that year. Any links for wiring diagrams would be great.

i also have to check out this toyota buggy you speak of sounds beast :2gunfire:
